Florida high schools already offer AP courses in German history, Italian history, and a few other countries and regions, but refuses to offer AP AA history? And this thread is already filled with racist nonsense. Brojos got to so proud of how their site has devolved into this utter BS.
No, FL offers German and Italian language and culture, with the emphasis on language. Not Italian American History.
Africa is a continent, not a country or a language.
I have two kids in the FL public school system, and there is much more focus on African American history with US history than my public school days.
This is clearly a race baiting issue meant to smear DeSantis. None of us know the exact details of the proposal, or reasons why he feels it is not eligible. The left knows that DeSantis is now the leading threat against the Democrats (more so than Trump) in 2024 and have clearly started their smear campaign.
Yet, he won by a landslide on the last election, and people are moving to FL in record numbers. I’m not saying the guy is perfect, but I’ve lived here almost 40 years, and he has been really good for the state.
I work in a field that centers race and inequality, in addition to many other social justice-related issues.
Please elaborate what your job description is. Are you an infamous DEI official?
I'm not a DEI official, though reluctantly served on a DEI task force in the past. DEI is a perverse corporatization of already messed-up ideas about the cause and remedy of social inequalities.
I live in Florida. DeSantis is pandering to the red neck, mouth breathing, neck beard wearing white, fox news watching voters here in this state. These people are still fighting the civil war in their minds. Some of this race baiting stuff plays on the national level but most will not. Of course it plays well on Lets run because. Well. You know the answer to that.
DeSantis is promoting a family first agenda in FL. Covid freaks and groomers are not welcome. Families who want protect their children and contribute to society are welcome there. Sounds like Florida does not align with your values. States like California, New York, Oregon and Washington would welcome you with open arms. The state of FL will not miss you.

Have you taken African American history as a college course? I would be willing to be my life savings: I am certain the majority of posters stating they are against African American history as a high school course have not successfully completed African American history as a college course. Without completing African American history in college how can you be certain African American history has little to no merit as a high school course?
The notion that African American history "significantly lacks educational value" is precisely what is so troubling about DeSatan's latest red meat offering. This is another attempt to whitewash history. Slavery existed. So did segregation. How can you possibly deny the importance of teaching our history? Conservatives themselves often say that we need to teach American history. Why doesn't this count? And as for the lack of any other ethnic studies AP courses, this is only the first. There will be others to follow for those seeking college credits for them.
Cite an actual text from "Critical Race Theory" to that effect or retract your remark. Critical Race Theory is nothing more than a movement within critical legal studies to examine the history of race in American law. So, you will see, for instance, descriptions of Supreme Court decisions involving race. It is not a theory about what society is or about one race being superior to another or anything like that. Nor does critical race theory focus on the treatment of African Americans alone. The subject matter in the anthology I taught about twenty years ago includes Supreme Court cases involving Japanese internment camps in World War II, the arguments against permitting citizenship to a Japanese man and an Indian man (each of whom claimed he was white or belonged to the white race according to 'race science' and thus qualified to be a citizen of the U.S.), and the question of whether the child of a female slave was herself or himself a slave.

Then they will complain they can't pay their student loans back. Useless degree for people who have no business going to college. It goes with all the other ethnic, gender and social 'science' degrees.
Is economics a useless social science degree?
Yes. In many instances it is, especially when it has little to no math content.
It's like roll-call for the "I'm not racist ...but" crowd.
Maybe, but as another poster said, unless you know what the contents of the course are, you don't have enough evidence to comment on the issue.
I work in a field that centers race and inequality, in addition to many other social justice-related issues. Something remarkable has happened in the past 5-10 years: instead of talking about inequality from multiple perspectives and recognizing the complexity of social phenomena, everybody is now expected to adopt a single, narrow ideological stance on all diversity and inequality issues. Unless you agree that all of Western civilization is an effort to create and sustain a white supremacist, cis-normative, heteronormative power structure, you are hateful and need to be re-educated. Note that Critical Race Theory asserts this very thing about whiteness. Never mind that the identity categories I just named are relatively recent constructions. One either has to admit that they are guilty by birth (or powerless and victimized by birth)and commit to dismantling our social structure, or face harassment, name-calling, etc.
When these ideas show up in education, they create an emotionally-abusive and hostile environment that "privileged" categories of people are expected to tolerate due to their original sin. IMO, this form of education is a violation of The Civil Rights Act. However, few white people, heterosexuals, "cis" people are likely to file a complaint because doing so is tantamount to career suicide.
Back to DeStantis: FIRE and other free speech orgs have taken aim at him for attempts to censor educational institutions in the name of anti-Wokeness. Their concerns may be founded. I have not looked into the specifics of legislation, etc. However, I suspect that some of the stuff DeSantis is taking aim at is actually illegal vis-a-vis civil rights laws. If African American Studies courses are scapegoating groups based on protected characteristics, they will futher contribute to hostility and division. Maybe DeSantis is framing the problem incorrectly.
I think this is a very interesting and well-written post. It’s consistent with my 25 years in academia. Thank god I was in physical science and immune from most of the nonsense.
