As a runner and a cyclist I would say this is not true. Unless you are comparing the elite. If you compare all runner and all cyclist I would lean to saying there are more cyclist, esp middle age to older that are very out of shape upper body. You can be 50 and have a big gut and have rocks as legs and keep up on group rides at 20-23 mph on a Saturday morning.
Off topic, I always wondered how Blummenfelt can run a 2h30' marathon at the end of a seven hour ironman : His wikipedia gives 77kg for 1m77 which translates into a BMI of nearly 25 and he must not be so far off judging by his youtube videos.
One thing I've noticed is that cyclists look way better built than distance runners. They seem to have more muscle on them and just look more athletic. Look at and compare his build to Kipchoge. Wouldn't cyclists want to be as skinny as possible to reduce the amount of weight they are pushing? And why are cyclists in general look like they have more upper body strength than elite distance runners?
That's , what, 20 years ago when the epo, hgh, roids, etc allowed them to carry all that weight around? Now, with just microdosing, they look 3/4 dead. Google Chris Froome with his broomstick arms.

There are some more recent studies that show aerodynamics is so much more important than weight of the bike or cyclist. Sans climbers it would be better to be more "athletic".
From a "hobbyist" perspective it is easier to be lean cycling 10 hours a week LSD in the fat burn range vs. running 5 hours a week above that range.
This won't be determined by looking at specific athletes one at a time.
But have you ever seen the start of a big college cross country meet (men or women)? The lineup is resplendent with youth, health and fitness. It is like a competition in blossoming towards the prime of life. They are more beautiful than fashion show models. And when they take off running, it is more dynamic and glorious than the Avengers battle scenes.
I might be exaggerating, but not by much. It is f---ing glorious.

(a) They may not think that the differential is "Bonkers!". I mean just using the word "bonkers" like that might trigger some downvotes because you sound like one of the dads on the Progressive commercial. (b) They may think the post is not that relevant to the argument and is a waste of time.
You are way off base. I have been to spectate at a lot of cycling events and with the exception of the sprinters (who have no chance of winning an overall event) the cyclists are scary thin. They have the worst anorexia of any male athletes that I know of.
Runners can be a much bigger mix of body types since the 1500m guys can be quite strong. Centro was ripped but nobody is stronger than Lopez Lomong:

Distance running is an incel sport lads, unfortunately. That’s why many of us are bird-boned. It takes more nuts to careen down a hill in a pack of 30 people on bikes going 35 mph for several hours than it does to run for 3-20 minutes.
