Malmo is totally right on this. Dick Quax ran 3:36/3:56/2:10:47 prior to Dixon’s marathon debut. Also, anyone with a brain would have known that Lasse Viren was capable of running well under 4 and considerably faster than his 2:13:11 marathon (which was run the day after winning 5k gold, having already won the 10k, when there were still 10k heats, for 5th place in the 1976 Olympic marathon).
Yes of course you and Malmo are correct. This is so bizarre when you see the upvotes and many downvotes on something so obviously correct. The subject is sort of complicated in a way though. Dixon ran his 3:53 mile in 1975, 8 years before he won NYC. However in 1974 Dixon ran 3:33.89 which is obviously superior to the 3:53. Many runners could have broken 4 and 2:15 although the number is smaller if they have to do it within the same year. Garry Bjorklund ran 4:05 in HS and then later became a 2:10 marathoner. Malmo himself was potentially capable of sub 4 and of course he ran faster than 2:15. There are many others. Yifter had the ability to break 4 and 2:15. Emiel Puttemans ran 3:56 in 1973 and 2:12 in 1983. The list of runners who had this ability is fairly long.

I wouldn't have been surprised one way or the other with M Yifter and Marathon. There are sub-1:44 800m men who could not have defeated M Yifter, 400m. There wasn't big money racing 1/2 Marathons in 1970's. My best guess, Yifter would have been elite to 1/2 Marathon. I assume his performance would have degraded past 1/2 Marathon but no idea exactly.
According to the IAAF Points Table a 4:00 Mile equals a 2:15:00 marathon.
Besides just trying to cross reference every sub 4:00 miler to see if they've run under a 2:15:00 marathon are there other lists that any of you Track Stat Superstars know of?
The real question is how many people could run a 4:00 mile and a 2:15 marathon in the same race
Paul Cummings (RIP) did this also. 1500 meters: 3:37.6 Mile: 3:56.4 Marathon: 2:11:31
Off the top of my head, other Americans who did this:
Thom Hunt, Rudy Chapa, Matt Tegenkamp, Greg Meyer, Malmo (if you consider his 3:40.6 1500 to be sub-4 - I do), Galen Rupp, Ken Martin, Andrew Bumbalough, Duncan McDonald
I'm sure I'm forgetting quite a few. Especially the 3:59 / 2:15
Then there are a lot of close, but no cigars - probably could have if they'd run more mile races
Ryan Hall, Meb, (maybe Craig Virgin...did he run any 1500's or miles in College or after?)
Or the shoulda-woulda-couldas if they'd run a marathon.
Couldn't pull up guys between 2:12 and 2:15 super easily, but this is all of the sub 4:00 and sub 2:12:00 guys according to WA:

Sometimes you have to ignore I.A.A.F. Maybe the men & women are all nice people at I.A.A.F. but don't trust their math.
Intuitively, does a 4 minute mile seem equal to a 2:15 Marathon? Of course not.
Let's do the math:
4 minute is 240 seconds. Men one mile w.r. is 3:43.13 or 223.13 seconds.
4 minutes is 1.075606149 or 7.5606149% slower than one mile w.r.
If a male were to race Marathon 7.5606149% slower than 2:01:09 Marathon w.r., 2:10:xx. No woman in history or today has raced 4 minute mile. Some women have raced 2:15 or faster Marathon.
Look at some guys from the 1970's. Rod Dixon was a sub-4 miler and a sub-2:10 Marathoner. Garry Bjorklund was a bit slower than 4 minutes and a bit slower than 2:10. I don't know Frank Shorter 's mile but I'm guessing he was about a 4:05 miler and a bit slower than 2:10. I'm sure many elite Marathoners are capable of both sub-4 and sub-2:10.
Women get closer to men (by percentage) the longer the distance. Look at the 100 meters, it's almost 10% from the world record 100 woman to man
You're right, he popped up twice on my two lists because he broke 4 both indoor (3:56.8) and out (3:53.62 in 1975), I should've been a little more clear about how I ordered it
The world record for the mile was 3:51.1 by Ryan around the same time Derek Clayton ran his dubious 2:08:33 and more legit 2:09.
His more legit 2:09 was 200 meters short, per Bill Rodgers.
Where did you find this 200 meters short figure? The original course was destroyed by road construction and can't be remeasured. Hence the controversy.

You are assuming world records for different distances are equivalent performances. They are not. Some world records are better than others so extrapolating doesn't work.
