If we multiply the men's world record of 12:35.36, we get 13:37.19. 24 college guys ran faster than that at BU.
If we assume the men's world record is soft (Bekele ran 12:37 before super shoes, and Cheptegei's 12:35 was run in somewhat less than ideal conditions) and use 12:29 instead of 12:35.36, you get 13:30.31 if you multiply by that amount. 12 college guys ran faster than that at BU.
Wow...just seems like people are looking for any reason to insult someone else on here...
Anyway, it's an interesting approach to measure performances against WR times...although I don't believe it tells you anything regarding the performance itself, rather than the quality of the WR instead. What I mean by that is that some WR's have been set that are a massive improvement over the last (ie Bolts 9.58). So by Bolt destroying the old records, it makes every other male runner look slower if you are comparing based on the WR...where in fact it had nothing to do with the other runners.
I believe a much more relevant comparison would be against previous years seasons best or World / Olympic winning times. This way you are comparing a performance against a relevant benchmark rather than potentially a one-off performance.
Anyway, Tuohys race was clearly not what she was looking for...but anything around a PB is a great race for anyone. Tuohy not lowering her PB in her first race of the year is not terrible...she has a full season to try to meet her expectations.
