The butthurt about her representing Greece is so funny. Like any of you wouldn't have done the same thing if you had the option. IMO, if you can speak the language at least semi-fluently and meet the existing requirements for citizenship, have at it. Pretty sure the language piece is more than can be said for a couple of our recent male allegiance-switchers. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Seems like you should at least be able to do a translator-free media interview with your "home"country's press after your race.
In order to do something like this, it would mean one of their parents would have to be an immigrant, and we all know how cranky letsrun posters feel about immigrants...
Her mom committed suicide when she was 4 (Alexi not her mom).
I don’t like any runner who hobby jogs races and expects to be sponsored and paid. It takes money away from elite athletes who advance the sport and treats the sport like a joke. I didn’t like what Alexi did. If she was an unsponsored runner she can do what she wants but this just feels like a gimmick.
Pro runners are paid to be competitive. I do believe alexi joined the Greek team because she didn’t want to compete with Americans for spots on teams and she said so. In her book she constantly mentioned she was an Olympian, but didn’t really get into the shortcut she took to get there. And yes, it was a short cut. I also agree that her motivation to be competitive has been lost and it doesn’t look like she wants to put in the work to further her running career.
Alexi is being paid to run professionally but she’s not contributing any more to the sport than any of the thousands of marathon runners out there. Why does she get paid and they don’t?
This is an extremely limited view of what 'advancement in athletics" actually is. Alexi isn't my favorite athlete or persona out there. To be honest, if I was that runner she paired with, I'd find her really distracting, not inspiring or helpful, but I'm a person who can't deal with a lot of "rah rah" stuff overall.
But that being said, she is really clear that she is advancing the sport by helping people see how a process focus and considering joy and connection impacts motivation in a positive way as opposed how an outcome only focus can detract from motivation and drive. A lot of our sport is hyperfocused on the idea that the ONLY measure of success is winning, or fast times (which you point out) and that we need to somehow suffer to get there. She's actually advancing the sport by showing that there is another way of being and challenging this notion. Sorry that's so uncomfortable for you,
Here is another pic from DailyMail article. I have nothing against her and didn't care she changed citizenship to run in Olympics. She ran some really fast times in college. And those times were before super shoes. But this is just bizarre unless there is some context that I am missing out on. Another spectator I was talking to at the race who is not a runner was just as confused as I was. It was only when she passed us that we figured out she is in the race. Her race number was pinned to her bum area.
Do Nascimento had led for most of the men's professional race but went down just after the 20-mile mark and needed medical attention, allowing Evans Chebet to take the lead with five miles remaining.
"after the race i danced, met so many glitter braveys, then soaked in Epsom salts & asked my teammates @korres to call on #ThatGreekGlow to help me wash off the glitter tears of joy. i used the Greek Yoghurt line of products to bring my skin back to its glowing natural Greek self. i think I’ll keep this hair in for another day though..!!!!"

That 's hilarious, 2 Olympians in one picture and the person writing that story, presumably someone that should know something about running, is completely clueless! How do you cover marathon running and not notice Shalane in a photo?

1) Pro runners are paid to be competitive because that brings notice to their sponsors. She's found a different way to do it.
2) Why does she get paid? You're talking about her.
Alexi Pappas is retarded, and I don't mean that as a pejorative, I mean it literally. She acts like she's 5 years old and people think it's cute. We need to do something about society because it's gone batsh*t crazy. Not that long ago we would ask people like this what their fu****g problem was; we used to tell them to grow the f**k up, now we can't say anything because we may cause them to have mental health issues. NEWSFLASH: They already have mental health issues!
And let me guess, my post will be removed because I used a word in the English language that correctly describes a person who is less advanced in mental, physical, or social development than is usual for their age. Call the cancel police immediately.
She sort of has that Weird Al thing going on where you would really think she’s jewish based on outward appearances but she actually isn’t. This isn’t a good or bad thing. I’ve similarly had people think I’m a member of the tribe because of how I look/seem.

Clearly the most important person in that picture is former Bachelor, Matt James (who Shalane is pacing).

It's the age old question - would you rather go to prison for a year or go back down to white belt?Find out what Rexley and his very special brother choose (...

She deserves every penny she can legally get, just like you and I do. Too bad you and I can't monetize our mediocre performances. Jellie much?

Whether she provides value for the money isn't determined by what you think she should do for the money, but by what the people paying her want her to do for the money. Just like real life.
I mean whatever, she can do what she wants. If champion wants to pay her, they can.
I'm just curious to know if she has any elite running goals. Doesn't look like she does anymore. She's a great artist, and accomplished writer. Maybe she just wants to take that path.
