Katelyn Tuohy and NC State blasts Flotrack's Gordon Mack

I think Tuohy is the one who is going to lose it for her team.

I think this is what's known as a hot take, and because we are very protective of young girls, this is getting blown out of proportion. Every major sport has to deal with reporters making statements like this.

It's not fair to Seymour. But it can also be true that one volatile runner is the biggest factor in how a team might finish. I don't even know if this is true in the case of NC State. I just don't keep up. I am glad her girls are sticking up for her. THey should. But this is a kind of take that is very common in the sports world. And of course this guy will have to live with the consequences.

It happens in sports all the time. You don't think Lebron, Manning, or Brady don't have pressure on them even in a team sport.

College athletes are adults, not kids. Adults their age are at war.

Do you watch collegiate sports at all? Watch an NCAA Men's Basketball game, football game, baseball game or any other popular sports. The number of times an analyst of any sort - in studio or in game - makes statements such as what you noobs are feeling disrespected about is only limited by the number of games/competitions on air.

What the guy said wasn't all that big of a deal, could very well be true and isn't bullying. We want the sport to be covered by the media but when the media says something that may not be what we want to hear, we cry.

For what it's worth, there are plenty of accounts from male athletes in big sports like football and basketball talking about how hard it is to deal with constant scrutiny and how damaging fans and the sports media can be to their mental health. "We" may feel more protective of cross country runners than of the young men taking hits in full stadiums, but that doesn't mean that this kind of talk only gets under the skin of female athletes or of athletes in "non-revenue" sports.

I also don't believe that "others have it worse, so you have no reason to feel hurt" is a very sound ethical framework. Instead of looking at this situation and thinking that the NC State athletes are being too sensitive, what if we looked at it as a way to empathize with college athletes in other sports who receive way more ridicule, and to realize that that's not a good situation? "Stop whining, because it could be worse" is such a bleak way to respond to people expressing genuine hurt, and many situations are worse off because so many people have that knee-jerk response to other people's emotions.

Yes. A dishonest opinion is one that is done for publicity or clicks. And name-calling is the most classic form of insult. Resort to name calling rather than explain what is wrong with his take.

But he didn't ridicule her. He stated what he believes is a truth. Ibeleiev it is also. I guess the NC State fans think the team is more vulnerable than I realized.

If I understand correctly, he asserted of Flo that all of NCSt's title prospects come down to one runner and then added to that by stating that the runner in question is fading. So not only is a media figure in the sport (small world as it is) stating something erroneous and publicly calling out and placing a ton of pressure on one athlete who is not even top three on her team, but then he piles on and states that she is struggling as the season progresses. So the team stood up for her.

In point of fact a title does come down to the 4th and 5th place runners on each contending team. But is another thing to go on Flo and name a team's fourth or fifth ranked runner and lament how badly you think they are doing.

Yes. So in effect, the teams is saying that she won't impact theor chances. Sounds like Gordon is more confident in her than her team is.

Or, alternatively, maybe athletes can learn how to embrace the spotlight. Pressure is what you make of it. You can succumb to it, or see it as an opportunity and use it as fuel.

Most of the attention justifiably goes to the stars. I never even heard of Seymour until this thread, but of course we all know about Tuohy. If I was in Seymour’s position, I would welcome the attention and the knowledge that I can be a difference maker for my team.

Gordon is dumb but the real story here is that NC State and other are trying to call him a pervert without any evidence. I have no respect for Gordon but it is slanderous for them to portray him as a pervert.

If any male fan of women's sports is automatically going to be accused of being a perv, then eventually they'll stop being a fan. These women are killing their own sport.

I would defend NC State on the facts of the prediction, but their response was so sickening that they lost a fan.

They are trying to ruin this guy's life by essentially labeling him as a pseudo-rapist. That is NOT ok.

Yeah, sort of confused about the responses to this video.

The Flotrack podcast is usually pretty hard to listen to because of the constant atrocious takes by both Kevin Sully and Gordon Mack, but overanalyzing cross country stats to make lofty predictions about how things will play out at NCAA is like 60% of cross country. Plus, these athletes are excellent athletes at a big time program. As you move up the chain towards professional, it seems like you just have to get more used to people talking (positive and negative) about your performances. That’s just part of the nature of sports and the people who follow them.

Sure, athletes can have gripes about this, but the team posting a bunch of comments on the video just seems sort of…cry babyish. Like, why not just focus on ensuring they win and then afterwards telling Gordon Mack to think twice before doubting them again (or whatever they want to say that sounds cooler than this)?

Gordon sucks. That podcast would be so much better without him.
