Australia really has turned into a draconian Sh*T Hole.
Remember during COVID they were arresting people outdoors for not wearing masks and tracking people with that APP having them use a camera and report their locations etc....
2) Think that you have to be injured for it to be a crime.
3) Are making it clear that they would be perfectly fine with an adult pushing their children over ding dong ditch
4) Think that ding dong ditch is some brand new, heinous crime.
Sir, you’re right and what you say is technically correct but I think these were exceptional circumstances which a world-class cyclist was facing and he lost his nerve and acted in an irrational way for a few seconds which turned out to cause significant problems.
Objectively, you are correct in stating that it was assault, but it was a minor assault committed by a world class cyclist who was trying to get his necessary sleep before one of the biggest races in his life and I just thought that the way the police handled this could possibly have been different with them understanding the situation and using their judgment to let him off with a warning so that he could participate in the race with a cool and reposed head.
If the police, the parents, the teenagers, the hotel manager and the cyclist had come together in an office and discussed the situation in a rational way, this sad episode could have all been avoided, provided that all parties acknowledged that it was an unfortunate incident and that they were prepared to move on without any repercussions. Common sense should have prevailed and booking the cyclist into the police station in my opinion was overkill in the circumstances where clemency could have ruled the day. I think in most other parts of the world, this type of incident would not have happened and the cyclist’s name would not have been dragged through the mud in the newspapers and the media.

You are probably the worst one here. The sad part is that you're still making excuses. He committed assault...period.
My rule of thumb is that if Ghost is going out of his way to defend someone, I know they've taken a big step over an obvious line. This is the guy who defended Rashid Ramzi (as he defends every drug cheat I've seen discussed here) because "as a pious Muslim, he would never cheat." Ghost has an ability to make up excuses for star athletes who behave badly like few people I've ever seen on the internet.
Just saying it as it is, if you don't agree with any of those facts, please enlighten me.
For the record, and making fools of you lot, van der Poel pleaded guilty to common assault, but will appeal the conviction recorded. He said himself: "I should have called reception".
It's called extortion by the Australians so they can get van der Poel to pay money. Van der Poel didn't want to stay a moment long in gawd-foresaken Australia so just paid up and left.
And now the Dutch public are leaving scathing reviews about that hotel:
Pushing anybody is not an "assault" unless done (and proved) with the intent to injure. It is a misdemeanor (administrative delict) in most civilized countries. One of the teenagers "claimed" and injury though. I would like to see that injury...
Australia is a police country, just like USA.
A police country where you'd hard pressed to see police patrolling.
Was speaking via Whatsapp to a friend in a less developed country when a police helicopter came circling over, calling out that they are looking for an 80 yo with dementia etc, gave description, did this for about 30min, sent texts about it. I showed her on videocall. She was gobsmacked that they provided a helicopter to do it, and I said, "yep they actually don't have much to do, no crims to chase" :-)

So what about the former deputy Premier who has been charged? Exception for him too? What about a well known person, brother of current NSW Rugby Union coach, to be charged with murder for a one punch that killed a surfer the other day? What about millionnaires. Hey, what the hell, everybody just go ahead and assault each other.
Yeah I had this happen the night before English Schools and it made me irate. His competition is much bigger so I can understand how he was severely annoyed. To me someone knocking on your door ahead of a race like that is worse than being pushed. It's stupid.
Australia has also banned van der Poel from entering Australia for 3 years for pushing the teens harrassing him. Australia really doesn't want tourists.
Jeez. There is no ditch involved. It does what it says on the tin.
Breach of the peace, or similar, is a crime in most civilised countries.
A 13/14 yr old girl is more than capable of looking like an adult and acting like a chav. The age of criminal responsibility is normally much younger than 13.

The girls knocked on the cyclist’s door, room 930, multiple times at 10.40pm and ran back into their room, which “frustrated” van der Poel as he had the race the following morning.
“He waited for the victims to knock on his door and chased them into their hotel room, following close behind them,” court documents state.
Van der Poel chased the girls, causing one of them to run into a corner and crouch down while covering her face.
The cyclist ran up to her and grabbed her by both arms, squeezing them and pushing her against a wall while yelling at her, causing her to suffer a minor carpet burn graze to her right elbow and redness to her left forearm.
van der Poel noticed the second girl trying to leave the room and pushed her against a wall using both hands.
“The girl fell to the ground and the accused left the room and went to his hotel room,” court documents said.
I've followed this since the news broke live during the world road race Saturday night EST. The woke lib White knights are out in force on this thread.
He barely pushed some girls who are fully grown. I saw the TikTok. These girls were thick like 5"5 140lbs. They were fine, they just couldn't believe that they were in fact NOT invulnerable as they thought they were, so they ran off to mommy to cry and pout. Then their entitled parents decided to ruin the world championships by calling the police.
Never EVER visiting Australia. What a disaster of an island. Wow.

The Australian parents of the brats were actually filming their brats ding dong ditching and also when van der Poel chased them from his room. Clearly the Australian parents were planning this harrassment of van der Poel for extortion money since they then sold the videos to the Australian media who have now posted some of them. Van der Poel is recorded saying the teenage brats were harrassing him with the ding dong ditching for "three hours".
I'll be interested to hear all the facts but from what's come out so far, I'm with the cyclist. Now, if the girls did it repeatedly. they need charging with disturbing the peace. And, if their parents knew what they were doing...well, throw the book at them. It's pathetic the way victims have become the villains.

One short clip has appeared online, after being sent to multiple media outlets, showing one girl filming the other knocking on Van der Poel’s door before running away, the Dutchman whipping the door open and pursuing them into their own hotel room. Van der Poel, dressed only in his boxers, can be seen reaching out for one of the girls before the video cuts off.
Nowhere in the article does it say the parents were participating in or filming the ding dong ditching.
