“Nina mafua” - in Swahili means “I have a cold” “Nina mafua” - in Swahili means that “I have the flu”
This means that in Kenya there is no distinction between having a cold and having the flu and when Bonny (Kibiwott) told me on Instagram that Julien was “suffering from the flu” in Copenhagen he was being truthful because having a cold and having the flu are interchangeable for a Kenyan.

With regard to the bloke who said that Wanders going out for a 3 and a half mile jog at 3:45 a.m. in Paris last year before the marathon was crazy it may not be that crazy if you take into account that Nairobi is one hour ahead of Paris and also that Julien's body was adjusted to Kenyan time and as he had only arrived in Paris a few days prior to the race. So that means that 3:45 a.m. Paris time is in fact for 4.45 am or almost 5 am Kenya time which is almost exactly the time that Julien normally gets up in Kenya at so it is not really in the middle of the night. Remember that in Kenya almost all the runners go to bed around 8-9pm because there's nothing else to do and the streets are very dark after 6:30 or 7pm. Kipchoge and co usually retire for the night around 8 or 8:30 p.m.. only people up to no good are usually in the streets in Kenyan remote towns after 7 p.m.. this is a generality but it holds true. I've been there and seen it with my own eyes back in Kenya in April and May just a few months ago.
The Swiss guy looks to be very difficult to 'control' .He is the only top runner ever with a terrible understanding of the need of proper recovery to get the very best effect of his training and to prepare for races. Most truly this is the cause to his frequent injuries.Would surprise me if he ever will be back to his best times. It's hard to believe Canova coach him.
Canova is a great coach, and it is unfortunate that two of his best runners Sondre Moen and Julien Wanders have both suffered injuries or other setbacks in the past couple of years. This does not mean that the careers of the Norwegian and Swiss monster are over but simply that maybe they have to readjust and tweak some methods in their training regimens. Both of these runners seem to be prone to injuries and I remember with the Norwegian he was not even able to race on the track wearing spikes without the threat of injury taking over. I think he (Moen) ran his best 10,000 m on the track with road racing shoes, around 2720.

Moen ran 27:24.78 on August 31, 2019 in Kristiansand, Norway. Wanders has a best of 2717 set the same year, 2019.
2020 and 2021 were both disappointing years for both of these monsters. We can only hope that December 2022 will be good, notably for the Swiss man who is entered in the Valencia marathon. Not sure what Moen’s plans are, but perhaps somebody could update here with regard to the Norwegian.

Interesting video but I think it is facile to misinterpret the Objective of the exercise, in this case the 30 km (mostly) uphill run , and if you go to 2:20” in the video, Canova explains that when running uphill with people of equal ability over 10 km on the flat, there could be a two minute differential in time over this type of course, which could explain why Wanders, as well as German phenom Petros, were dropped by some of the main players including Kiptanui who was preparing for the Boston Marathon. In addition, Profess. Canova explained that the Swiss man was at 80 or 85%.

Yeah, nah. Canova said they are all going 80-85% effort. He happened to say that when the camera is focused on Wanders.
Wanders is unable to keep pace with the top group on that climb.

Fair enough and maybe what you say is true but what is also true is that the Italian coach, Canova, said that when doing a specialist type climb like this you can have two athletes who have the same time over 10 km, for example 28 minutes, but sometimes the differential can be over two minutes when climbing. This means that one runner who is a 28 flat 10,000 m runner might be two minutes behind another runner who’s also 28 Flat for 10,000 m but is a much better climber. We also saw how jaded Amanal Petros looked on the climb, and yet he is a 59/2:06 Monster. Also, did you notice the Kenyan runner running with Wanders? - he has a tiny shuffle stride with absolutely no knee lift. Who is that guy?
Despite the fact that Julien has the body shape of a Tour de France climbing specialist one gets the feeling that he does not like climbing to the extent of some of the others. Wanders is a classic “rhythm runner” and I think his optimal distance right now is the half marathon where he can expressed his talent to the best extent especially if the course is flat. When Julien is on song, there are few humans on planet earth who can equal that magnificent stride and rhythm in full flight. It is a very invigorating and emotional sight to see him in full flight, magnificence personified, is Julien Wanders, who almost appears to be pre-formatted to excel over the half marathon distance. Let us now hope that his marathon foray in December in Valencia, Spain, will yield the results that he so deserves in the 2:04:00 -2:07:00 range. His (Wanders) whole life is devoted to running so he deserves the best of success. He has sacrificed so much.
Are you referring to Sondre Norstadt Moen? if that is the case then I feel very sorry for the Norwegian because it will be challenging to get back to the previous 27:24/59:00/2:05:00 level. But let us wish the puma sponsored athlete the best of success.

This is what Sondre Nordstad Moen wrote on his facebook page 15th july:
"A torn Achilles has been a recurring problem since 2017. At irregular intervals, it has flared up and created challenges in everyday training. Already in 2017, the doctors wanted to operate on the injury, I had just run 2:05 and didn't want to lose several months of the season. In 2022, the body has been partially and unreceptive to training due to 2 rounds of covid and/or vaccines. When I still have to reset my body and start with a blank slate after a long period with a body that doesn't respond to training, it was the right time to overcome the heel problem I've struggled with for 5-6 years. If you want to compete at the highest level in the world in running, it's no use being 90%, then you have to be 100%. I want to run faster than ever. 2:05 is not my peak. Therefore, the body must be in order. The doctor who performed the operation is the much talked about Lasse Lempainen in Finland who works with several of the biggest football clubs in the world. The same hospital also operated on me in 2013 when my career was essentially over due to foot injury. This is not the terminus! The way back will be exciting and demanding!"

Thank you for this fascinating albeit sad information. This might explain why the Norwegian had a poor run in the Olympic marathon last year when he ran around 2:17:00, if my memory serves me right. Hope he gets back to his previous form.
