Waiting for studies to demonstrate training programs is like waiting for Godot. It's not going to happen. Why wait? Try it out and see how it works. Or, better yet, look at groups that have done this kind of training and see what their results are like. When I'm injured, if I can't find exercises that work, I try different movements until I feel the muscles concerned activating and repeat that. I don't need a study to tell me it works for me. When I could do fast repeats for my level in high school but couldn't hold the pace for the target race, I was missing tempos and long repeats. Adding those allowed me to convert interval training at shorter distances to race pace. 20 minute intervals make you stronger and tougher and better able to hold a pace.
