Mu shouldn't be DQ as she remained on lane 1, despite obviously being sneaky and closing the door to the brit. It should be against the rules to move as she did, but it isn't. I hope they change the rules soon, it was disgusting to see. Gidey started the final 100m on lane 1 and ended on lane 3, with an elbow to boot. Why wasn't Gidey DQ? This is the big story. Obiri was robbed of a gold medal.

It is agaisnt the rules just rarely enforced. If you DQ for 0.001 false starts, and stepping on a line not sure why you wouldnt considering DQing that move,

Mu drifted slightly outside which may or may not have been intentional, but she still had the front position and could control whether Keely could get by. Keely went for the inside pass and Mu closed off the inside line which is totally within the rules. Keely would still have had a shot to get by inside, but would now be risking a DQ if they tangled up. Keely was then forced to stay inside and settle for the silver because slowing and trying to get outside of Mu would have risked losing the silver, especially since Mu has super long legs and getting around them would have meant seriously putting on the brakes. Keely could still have won from that position if Mu crapped out completely, but she did not.
It's possible that Mu suckered Keely into the inside line and then trapped her there. If you watch Mu's semifinal, she did it there too. That's brilliant tactics. Anyone who has raced as much as these two should know not to take the risk on the inside line. You almost never get through. Keely looked pretty good and didn't need to make a desperation move; she may well have had a shot from the outside. Unlike Grant, she was not trapped inside and could have set up outside of Mu instead of inside, but it was just a simple tactical mistake. It happens and they both ran great.

100% agree. It's embarrassing how little people on this forum know about racing tactics and rules. Nothing Mu did was even remotely close to a DQ. I am almost certain it was brilliant tactics to sucker Hodgkinson into the rail where she could very legally squeeze her since she (Mu) had position. Only a moron would look at that and see a DQ.

There should be a fairness rule that the first one off the curve should always have to move into lane 2 - I'm so tired of seeing the fastest guy/gal not getting a fair shot at making it a photo finish - it happens all the time and it's never a good image even if according to the current rules.

You can do that and yes that is okay. But she didnt do that so it's moot. I didnt see an elbow that wasnt anything more than incidental contact which is absolutely permissible.

I do think Mu left a massive gap and then tried to close it after keely ran into it. However, I don’t think keely was impeded and didn’t quite have the legs to get past. But if Mu had moved over anymore I think it would have been very close to a dq.

This thread is stupid. Keely said she would have done the same thing in Athing's position in her interview. They are both great. Let's leave it at that.
