Our environment promotes higher calorie intake and lower physical activity. Obesity and genetics studies suggest that genes contribute to 40-70% of obesity.
Crazy. It's almost like rice and beans ACTUALLY ARE cheaper than McDonald's, and people who claim that junk food isn't the cheapest option
But you just claimed this. Meat is food. Grain and legumes are junk.
Consumption of grain and legumes coincided almost exactly with the development of civilization and social stratification, i.e. the poor people who have to eat them. Rich people don't touch that garbage.
Nope. Bad hypothetical + you write like a 15 year old.
The actions that lead to obesity are unhealthy and considered selfish by many. This is based in science and fact. People judge fat people because they are killing themselves and as a population consuming food that could be going to starving individuals that actually need it, all because they like food and have no self control.
Being gay is not harmful to yourself or others. If you judge someone for being gay you’re either religiously indoctrinated or not that bueno at thinking through things.
A more fair comparison to fat shaming would be:
Shaming someone for smoking.
Not necessarily agreeing with what all of OP is saying, cause I disagree with a lot of it. Moreso disagreeing with you because your analogy was not good and calling someone an idiot because they also see that your analogy isn’t valid, and you simply disagree with their opinion is L behavior.
You are obviously not very bright. The analogy to being gay is actually a fair one but you are not smart enough to understand it. Being gay is likely genetic the vast majority of the time. The tendency toward being obese is also. You simply do not have the intellectual horsepower to comprehend so you side with the other clown with the pedestrian mind.
Being fat is not genetic. Many mistake it to be because families tend to have the same eating habits. I was overweight along with the rest of my family until I realized it wasn’t my genes, it was the fact that we all thought going on a run or lifting weights every few days was enough to be fit, despite eating way too much food, mainly meat and processed carbs, which does nothing beneficial for you if you aren’t working out.
It is your fault if you are fat 99 percent of the time, it is your fault if you are gay 0 percent of the time. For that reason, calling someone out for being fat is valid, being gay isn’t. A physician (who is more intelligent and educated than both of us) will tell you to lose weight if you are overweight. A physician will tell you to stop smoking. A physician will never tell you to stop being gay.
As someone that won state titles year after year in highschool in speech and debate, I’m telling you the person that uses “I’m smarter than you” as an arguing point with ZERO BASIS is never the smartest person in the room and never the person that walks away with a trophy. EVER.
The genetic profiles that are pointed out in this article prove a predisposition, not obesity in it of itself. No one grows up obese. No one that eats a genuinely healthy diet and has regular exercise is obese.
Theres genetic predispositions to nicotine addiction, alcohol addiction, you name it. Hell, my family is full of alcoholics and I’m not one.
Abuse and other aggressive behavior patterns are passed through and can be identified with genetic markers, alcoholism is passed through genes, trauma that results in negative behavior has even been shown to be passed through genes.
Should those that abuse others, r*pe, and abuse substance also not be held accountable because they have the genetic markers that show they have the predisposition for those behaviors?

I have very little money and thus I keep my caloric intake low to save on expenses.
I am 5'11'' and intake just enough kcal to maintain 135lb. I have suspended running for now due to the unnecessary caloric demands, but I still walk 30-minutes per day to maintain health.
I track macronutrients and micronutrients closely and strategically select a combination of certain nutrient dense foods to make sure that I am not deficient in anything. Note that my caloric intake is low, but I am NOT malnourished.
Nearly everyone as poor as me is morbidly obese, wasting the little money that they have on food. Their belly being constantly full makes them fat, happy, complacent, non-competitive, and inevitably doomed to remain in poverty.
Humans are MEANT to starve when they have few resources and this starvation sends a signal to their brain to get aggressive, ugly, sharp, and competitive. The impoverished obese need to be taught this.
True. If you are going to be a fat slob, at least be a wealthy as Rosie O'Donnell.
I've just started reading your paper, but the first paragraph talks about the rapid increase in obesity and severe obesity have increased in recent years. If obesity is just predetermined by our genetics and there's nothing a person can do to fight it if they got the wrong genes, why are obesity rates changing? Are the genetics of the population changing that rapidly?
This article (quote below) is swinging too wide to the other extreme. It seems to suggest that even willpower is genetic, so we might as well all sit around and do nothing else except sleep, have sex, eat sweets, and watch tv and such. There’s certainly a genetic factor to obesity but there’s also the factor of just resisting stuffing your face with whatever crap is available. Education and upbringing must also have a role.
“But “willpower” is not metaphysical, it is encoded in our cerebral cortex, where conscious thought resides. How the cortex successfully communicates with the hypothalamus varies among individuals. The precise ways that this communication happens is not yet known but is an area of active investigation.”
Physicians are not necessarily smarter than any of you. They just happen to potentially be more educated in very particular areas.
This whole thread is a gross oversimplification of the underlying issues that cause obesity.
I would be curious how many obese people have a mental illness or suffer from varying levels of depression that happen to coincide with our modern way of life. Obese people should be seeing psychiatrists, not weight loss professionals.
Being overweight or obese is not good and never will be. It is unhealthy and very detrimental to a persons health. It is as bad for you as cigarette smoking.
