I was a 14:20 5ker and my threshold was nowhere near 5:02. More like 5:20

The 10k would be just as tough for Gabe. Abdi and Meb are there. McDougal and Solinsky could put out some good times based on their CC season. Ritz of course. Culpepper if he comes back to the track. Browne if he gets healthy again. Dobson has gone under 28:00. The US is probably every bit as strong at 10k as at 5k so Gabe is going to have a hard time of no matter what distance he runs.
and he was 39, almost to the day and not really training for much, it was not until he was past 41 did he break 4 minutes as a master.
EC could run a heck of a 10k as well, certainly sub 28 if firing on all cylinders and motivated to do so.
Ryan Shay ran 2:19 at the trials on a fast course. He had a hamstring injury a couple weeks back, but was able to compete. 2:19 was worth 23rd in the country. Gabe running that as a miler in his debut is impressive.

"The (trials) course in Birmingham is relatively flat and possesses the potential for fast times."
Nice Chad!
I agree with the above post that Jennings has the marathoner's short clipped stride. Hope he has found an event to suit him. In many ways the explorative nature of the even fits his personality. Let's root for this guy rather than bash him.
any idea where I can find searchable results? Thanks
where are the rsults?
this is where I got into trouble a couple years ago on this site.
In fair conditions, on a fair course a runner of Jennings ilk had better find it freaking ez to run 5:20 miles for a couple hours.
2:19 is not squat for a guy with his talent. It is not impressive other than he seemingly went after it and seemed to do enough training to get him through 2 hours without tanking too badly in the last 15 minutes.
He is not a miler, he is a runner, as are most milers. He was not exactly Juantorena moving up to the mile.
does anyone know where results are posted? Or have the top 10 men and women?
Earlier I indicated I was imepressed with Jennings running 2:19. I will elaborate and say that I do agree with mplatt in theory (and I remember Steve Scott cruising along for 20 miles or so of the Drake Relays Marathon at ~5:20 pace, the day after he won the invitational mile in sub-4:00 -- believe it was 1981 -- not that Jennings could hold Steve Scott's jock strap). What impresses me is that Jennings got himself in 2:19 shape at all, after what he's done (i.e., not done) the past two years. But we don't know how he was training for this, so we really don't know how to evaluate the 2:19.
Let us put this in perspective. Let us say that some guy coming back just ran a 5000 in 14:40. This is certainly NOT an indication of a return to world class level. 14:40 would put him at the level of the top women runners, as does 2:19 (almost 10 seconds/mile slower than the WR actually). 14:40 will almost get you LAPPED at the Stanford and maybe by a number of runners. If he had been able to maintain 2:15 pace that would be somewhat different, but it still is simply the women's WR and running the women's WR will probably not get you Q'ed for NCAAs in any running event.
There are no results posted (that I know of) but when they are I would think they will be here...

Thanks it's progress. Your former/current? teammates did really well. 3rd and 9th.

It was his DEBUT Marathon. Many people have tough first ones. His first 1500 probably wasn't all that great either. It was a slow day for some reason. Watching the coverage he looked like he was struggling late. He probably got out ahead of everyone a bit early, it happens. Could you imagine going by 25 miles and you are in the lead and someone going by you "Oh crap there goes $5000" ($10,000 for the win, 5 for 2nd).
Christ, this is a SPORT, not a life-of-death matter. So Gabe's a bit of a free spirit who likes to do things unconventionally; are we in that much need of a saviour for our sport that we can't let him live his life? And it's HIS life. He's training, improving and seems to be having fun. And 2:19 is nothing to sneeze at. Will he improve? Will he get back in mile shape like he did before? Maybe he will, maybe he won't. After a very unconventional road, he's still RUNNING. That's what matters. Nothing more.

It's amazing that the folks who think 2:18-19 is easy/sucks weren't out there picking up the 10 thou/5 thou for themselves.

Anybody happen to know anything about this guy who picked up the $250 for second master? Google check shows one other master result at Hartford M'thon two months ago with a hometown of Kenya. His other results are from 2002 where his age is listed as 34 with a hometown of Albuquerque. They are all tri's with slow bike/swim splits and fast run splits. He now lists a Cali hometown but has never run any other races here.
