I think he's lucky Francois and Kilian are not running though Pau and Xavier might be even harder to beat. He definitely as a shot the podium with this move but IDK I still think its tough to bet against those other 2. But anything can happen and thats whats great about ultras.
As far as the sponsorship thing, I agree with what your saying, its not a huge difference with US vs Euro runners and sponsorship but at least pre-pandemic it was definitely becoming a thing for US ultra runners trying to make a career out of running. Even Sage everything he is doing is still related to running, whether or not sponsorship is the only thing supporting him. IDK if its the influencer thing is more of a US thing or its the entrepreneurial spirit of Americans or what.
Walmsley addressed this in his interview.
Believe or not, even an elite guy like Walmsley feels stressed out about his livelihood, with each contract renewal could possibly be the end of his main income stream. Obviously it's not super likely to happen to a top performer like Jim but he realizes that unless he becomes a true worldwide GOAT in the sport, and banks a ton of $$$$, he may be looking at a second career.
He specifically says that at his current performance levels (which are only going to decline due to age), he can't squeeze out 20-30 more years of income. He also points out that there is so much more room at the elite level in ultrarunning. It's only a matter of time until we see more runners coming out of China, India, Latin America, etc.
So I think it's a great move for Walmsley to try to tackle UTMB, bank as much $$$ as he can while he still has the time, and eventually step back doing YouTube vids, coaching, or running an ice cream/smoothie shop.
