Less and less people are showing up for the local club runs. I'm not the organizer of the runs but I noticed that the behavior of 2-3 male runners may be a factor in the decline of the club. What happens is that somehow they manage to make inappropriate remarks about female runners . Just a few examples of remarks:
- About two female runners that were passing by (running) during the group warmpup: "those two are running for a few years but never join us".
- About a female running solo from the opposite direction: "(turning the head to look at her) that girl has a nice a....".
- About a female from the group (running 4-5m in front): "I want to see her wearing only compression socks".
When I moved to a new city a number of years ago, I decided to join some group runs. I have never been much of a group run guy. Typically I train solo or with a few runners that are about my speed. Anyway, what I immediately noticed is that each running group had its own personality. One group was all cross fit folks, another was basically the board of the local running club plus a few others, one was mostly women who talked loudly the whole run and stopped for water and bathroom breaks frequently, one was hipster, young dudes who brought home baked vegan snacks to each run (and smoked weed after ), one was essentially a dating singles group.... You get the idea. If a running group isn't your speed or style, go to a different one or start your own. Don't complain, just recognize it isn't your scene and move on. I will say I joined one group, that I didn't particularly like socially but they were about my speed and showed me trails that I was afraid to run by myself. Now I run them by myself and I'm thankful for the dudes who showed me the way, even if I don't hang out with them anymore.
