They tend to have long, but not fatal COVID infections (because their weakened immune systems don’t mount the cytokine storm that tends to kill people) and kick out lots of variants. You could throw as many vaccines as you want at AIDS patients and they’ll still kick out variants. It’s why some of the US’s first breakthrough clusters were in Provincetown. Additionally, one of the reason South Africans were not vaccinated is because guys like you are demanding all of the global supply, asking for boosters (that don’t even prevent an omicron infection) before compromised individuals in poorer countries are able to access a single shot. If two shots are enough to keep you out of the hospital, then why are you demanding more before others have access?

I couldn't even finish reading the thread before needing to respond to this stupidity. Not a single variant has originated in the US. What does US vaccine hesitation have to do with any of the variants?
Additionally, with the extreme mildness of Omicron, it's the variant we've been needing. This lockdown because of the Omicron outbreak is about the most ridiculous thing we've seen in this pandemic yet and that's saying a lot.

I know this whole vaccine thing has become a tribal “us vs them” situation but I really don’t think you can blame the unvaccinated in this situation.
The vaccine greatly reduces the negative effects of Covid but it appears it is not great at reducing transmission. I personally thought everyone understood this going into the vaccine phase of this Covid saga, apparently I was wrong. Some, like Cornell, are still chasing the impossible “zero Covid” goal.

Seems logical, not sure why you guys are getting in a huff again. Easy enough to just switch to on-line learning for a couple of weeks. The logistics are in place and most students are accustomed to this now.
Article says that 900+ students out of 25000 tested positive in one week. That's a lot of spread in a very small amount of time!
Seems like a good sign that the theories about the Omicron variant being contagious and elusive to vaccines is true. Seems like a good chance that we will see a huge wave of Covid cases spreading during the holidays and peaking in January. Hopefully if the variant is truly less severe and a large amount of the populations immune systems are bolstered from either the vaccine or previous infection then the Omicron wave will not have as large an impact on our health care system than previous waves.

1) You’ll never vaccinate the whole world. Deal with it.
2) There’s no hard evidence that variants are caused by unvaccinated. That’s a hypothesis that has never been tested. Similarly, the conservative hypothesis that has not been tested is that the vaccine selects for variants. A third hypothesis (based on some evidence) is that the vaccine develops in immunocpromised people because the virus is able to sustain itself for so long (and this undergo many rounds of replication and mutation). That’s probably the most viable one.
3) Schools shut down when there are high cases of the flu, as well. Having 5% of your student population be infected, even if it’s not deadly, has precedent for shutting down. So let’s not be dramatic.
Classes are already over.
All this really means is that final exams are being conducted virtually instead of in-person.

Almost 4% of campus testing positive in one week, that's pretty impressive. Of course, the kids that live off campus will all get together and party while classes go online, so it really won't stop the spread that much (it just won't occur under their watch, which is what the lawyers care about). How many of the 900 positives do you think end up on planes heading home? Omicron is headed your way.

Incorrect. Variants will always manifest. Reducing risk factors ie. fatties, diabetes, hypertension, smoking etc) diet and vitamin supplements will greatly reduce the risk i.e. building one's natural immunity. There have been hundreds of flu strains over the years and there are people who have never been sickened from one strain or another. period. They have developed a superior immune system through smart lifestyle choices. Consistently feeding synthetic vaccines does nothing to improve any of this.

You gross error is your assumption that 100% of those 100% vaxxed people interact with others (non-Cornell) people who are 100% vaxxed. Cornell is NOT in lock-down like a prison. Students and staff can come and go and interact with other people like you, lepers who lie and infect others.
