Cross country is pointless. There may as well also be races on sand, carpet, steep hills or a long set of steps.
A new Scandinavian guy took over from Jakob in U20 men.

Guess that Gressier hater goes home devastated. Did really well. Crippa just couldn't keep up with the pace of top three.
French team did really well. Who the heck are these guys...Hay, Schrub, Bour?? All top 10
Gressier did about as well as I would expect. Who else from that field would likely have beaten him? Maybe Kimeli? Crippa if he didn't get a stitch? Wanders has been bad for the last few years, he was never a threat.
Jakob makes pro running look too easy.

Yes. Look at his PRs. Almost world class.
In 1980.
Jimmy Gressier: The kid is just 24 years young.
Possible predictions for the future: 3:32, 7:30, 12:50, 26:50, 58:30. Is this unrealistic optimism? Possibly. Maybe not.
I think if Canova got his hands on this kid, he could achieve those times or similar. In France we believe in this kid. We say in French: » il est très courageux et il ne se pose jamais de questions. «
I am from the US and absolutely absolutely love watching Gressier the runner (don't know much about him as a person or his background). I have been following Gressier, Crippa, and Carlos Mayo since their junior days and Gressier is the real deal (In line with Klecker in terms of ability). I am a big fan of how he runs and I expect that he will have a shot at getting under 13 for 5K and possibly 27 for 10K sometime in the next 5 to 6 years. He is just coming into his prime and he has an impressive will (he isn't afraid to hurt).

Wanders was “flying in 2019, (27:17/59:12) but two poor seasons in 2020/2021. Hopefully he will get back to his 2019 form soon. ASICS runner.
Wanders had a bout with pneumonia (some people suspected COVID-19 but that was never confirmed) in March/April, 2021. Ran just under 29:00 in 10,000 O.G 10,000 final.
Wanders: He’s young. Time is still on his side. Running is his life and he has nothing else, at least not for the moment.
He has invested everything in running and Kenya for the past few years.
Gressier did very well. On paper, there were at least a half dozen contenders for bronze (Crippa, Kimeli, Filip, Mechal, Mayo, Butchart etc. most of which did not that well) and he beat them safely.
It was not a total surprise but not an obvious prediction either. It seems that some runners did much better on the course than others. The british (senior) men did not so well, the French surprisingly strong, Can and Koko not as good as expected etc.

Yeah I mean Gressier is a good runner, with good PRs. However, Jakob was never in any danger. Gressier is still in that second tier of runners.

Gressier: +1 - absolutely, his mental strength and focus is almost 2nd to none. I think there are runners who are more talented than Jimmy but his mental strength is absolutely phenomenal. He played competitive soccer from the age of 8 until the age of 17 and took a lot of knocks on the soccer field because he was quite frail compared to his opposition. This has created a very tough type of attitude in sports for him.

There’s a very good chance that Jimmy Gressier rewarded himself with a slap up meal at one of the McDonald’s restaurants in Dublin after the race, Grafton street, or other venue, his favorite meal of chicken McNuggets, large fries and large Coke followed by ice cream. Old habits die hard for this salt of the earth northern Frenchman brought up on the tough, challenging projects of Boulogne-sur-Mer.
He was interviewed after the race. Basically, he said that Jacob I. too strong and that he was basically head and shoulders above everyone else and he also said in the article that he could’ve potentially come second but he was careful not to overdo things and to get his first senior medal in the individual race. He also commended his French teammates for winning the team title.
In 2016, Jakob won the U20 race. Jimmy was 4th in that race and Hay was 7th. It’s the last time that Jacob met Gressier in a Euro XC.
Jimmy and Hay have progressed well in the last 5 years. A lot of those names in that U20 race are nowhere to be found,
Bibic from Serbia missing?
the French SM team did fantastically well and notably the guys all seem to be 'Gallic' french rather than N African extraction. Ghost - do you know much about Hay and the others? Do they live as Pros? Funded by French Fed?

Hay : turned pro recently after finishing his studies in journalism, trains in Belgium under Tim Moriau with adidas pro group. Placed 7th in Chia 2016 euro u20 XC behind Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Jimmy Gressier, improved gradually. I'm sure he can run under 13 before the end of his career.
Schrub : that may be the most impressive :
Placed 6th today, is near the end of 8 years of medical studies, only trains 5/6 times a week because he doesn't have the time, and doesn't even have a sponsor.
Bour : Was a sport instructor but he quit his job 3 years ago to try to live from his passion when he was offered a base salary of 5.4k a year by a French track club (yeah that's really nothing but there are a LOT of social aid from the government in France for people who don't have money, so 5k a year is not as bad as in the us)
He struggled a lot with money but now he joined asics and is doing financially better, so obviously he's getting better results. His future seems to be on the road and he dreams of the marathon in Paris 2024.
Perillat : was not really good young, but he really loved running so one day he dropped his job in London and came back in France to start training full time (both his parents are doctors so he lives with their money). He's regularly seen training in font romeu when he's preparing a big competition. He got his first selection with the French team, so it's starting to pay off.
Frère : working in the police force, it's really tough for him to find the time to train so he doesn't always achieve what he could with his talent. Ran a 2:08 marathon so he's still a great runner.
He is running and as you say then there is really one favourite.

+1 Nice synopsis. By the way, you can follow all of those guys or most of those (on the French team ) guys on Instagram and I do the same and follow everyone mentioned except for Perrillat. You’re also right about Mehdi Frère who was recently deployed to somewhere in Africa for a mission so no doubt had a little time to train there and you can see the photos of that on Instagram. His run (Frère) in Dublin was not where I thought he should be, running around 31:40 with Jacob at 30:15 for the course. Frère has a 28:04:00/10,000, so I feel he should’ve been top 20 at least.
French team on the podium at the euro cross in Dublin on December 12, 2021 singing the national anthem - something you don’t usually see the French soccer team doing with such gusto.
