What bothers me the most is all the attention biles is and will get when we should all be focusing on the achievements of her far less famous teammates that just won a silver medal. I imagine deep down those teammates resent biles for making this all about her.
Imagine winning a silver medal after training for a lifetime and all the media cares about is praising your quitter teammate for being "brave"

Basketball is an entirely different sport so you can’t really compare them but I 100% guarantee that basketball players struggle mentally and so do all athletes. As fans we hold these people to godlike status, and then get upset when they aren’t their best every time they compete.

She was clearly off her game from the beginning and it only seemed to get worse and worse. She seems to have the gymnastics equivalent of the yips, which is pretty dangerous when you are throwing yourself in the air while spinning like a top.
I think her withdrawal was a selfless act. Most superstar athletes are so pumped up with their monster egos that they cannot recognize when it isn't happening and they need to sub out. How many MLB pitchers have thrown one inning too many just based on ego? Biles had the presence and self awareness to recognize that she couldn't get it done and that she needed to hand it off to her teammates so she wouldn't bring the team down.
The "thing" any more is to claim mental anguish. She's just going with the flow.

In a word, yes. If Lebron or Brady dropped out after already carrying their teams to multiple prior championships, regardless of the cause, I would not be calling them soft. Stop equating a mental health issue with some sort of character flaw. Repeatedly over her career Biles has faced enormous pressure and succeeded. She’s anything but soft. In fact, if the problem was a psychological one and she owns it, she’s quite brave because she’s going to get a lot of hate. She could have easily slapped on a boot like Brazier instead.
Also, I suspect the inability to deal with the pressure of winning Cleveland a championship was a big reason why LeBron initially left for Miami, right? It absolutely was creepy the way Cleveland fans deified him, basically thought he would be their "savior," and then blamed him when they weren't granted a string of championships. As a Clevelander, I didn't blame him one bit for escaping that. "The Decision" was still obnoxious, though.

I have to hand it to you. That may be the greatest spin on quitting and wimping out that I have seen. I hope her teammates realize what a sacrifice she made by not performing.
In fact, I may call in at work tomorrow and tell everyone that counts on me that I'm not showing up because I'm trying to help them. I better not hear of any grumbling through the grapevine from some ingrate who had to cover for me. I'm in the running for employee of the year with the number of personal days I plan on taking.
