If Jerry Schumacher truly doesn't know about or has never heard of nandrolone or clenbuterol that means he is completely INCOMPETENT and NEGLIGENT as a coach. If she truly did eat contaminated meat (which I do not believe AT ALL) we still have all been let down as fans. It is their job to test negative on ALL TESTS!! Period. They are paid to make sure nothing comes back positive. They should never be eating ANYTHING that isn't of the highest quality. This is just a lame excuse that doesn't matter. Positive test, for whatever reason, = BAN. End of story.

I would think that when she got the positive test she would have gone back to the food truck and bought the same burrito to test it. Her claim is that the meat had organs mixed in with liver being the most likely source of the steroid. The only way that would happen is if someone cooked a whole pig and just carved it up down to the bone. Pork liver does not taste good and is not something that anyone would try to sneak in with regular cuts of pork. If the food truck was getting their pork from a whole pig, you would be able to go back and get another sample.

I've seen journalists unquestionably take Schumacher's word that this is a tiny amount. Where's the critical thinking among these journalists? The odds she could have blood levels this high from oral consumption are far, far less like than the "1 in 10" number Jerry gives(more PR spin).

This. To take athletes at their word is to be willfully naive. Because they have everything to lose, of course they're going to lie and plead persecution and unfairness and all the rest.

And the thing is, there is probably some level where they truly don't think they did anything wrong, so in their mind they aren't lying when they say they didn't cheat. Dopers don't just one day decide "Im gonna cheat." It's incremental steps, toeing the line, playing in that gray area with TUEs and testing windows and substances that aren't banned but are suspect, and then it's just another small step to go all the way into actual doping. I think on a level Houlihan genuinely believes she's not a cheater. She's just doing everything she can to win, in a sport that is really dirty. And maybe we need to have that conversation about just allowing all the substances to be legal. Let them all dope. Who cares? She may actually think she's doing her best. And now that she's been caught, she's trying to come up with any way to sow doubt, because she's trying to justify her choices in her own mind..

Frankly, I think a 4 year ban isn't enough. Anyone caught with a doping positive should also forfeit all their past results and any winnings, because it's all suspect and potentially ill-gotten.

It's a PR tactic: get your story out first because you know WADA be slow to respond. In the meantime you have the narrative that there's a cabal out there designed and destined to destroy the 'clean athletes'

There's a lot of claims for Shelby's side that need to be verified vs the normal professional testing regime, where athletes are notified and submit to sample collection for testing.

And why is the presumption that WADA has no way to distinguish from naturally occurring test vs synthetic? I doubt they would move in against a 'clean athlete' to simply have their conclusions and reputation destroyed when they release their findings.

The whole cycling peloton dopes...at least the ones who are trying to win. It's always been like that. Merckx and Anquetil both tested positive, along with many other stars through the years.

Doping control is more concerned with protecting its existence and jobs than the truth that meat is contaminated or not contaminated but rather is legally doped and they know this and have known for decades

Just like supplements are 'tainted'. Yes, WADA expects professionals to have their big boy/girl pants on and control what goes into their body which ultimately impacts performance.

It is really common for people in general to be in favor of Zero Tolerance policies like the ones WADA has in place when they favor them: never thinking or realizing that the policy could possibly apply to THEM. And then when it does--they realize the issues with them and become adamantly against them. This is clearly the case here.

A few people have mentioned Caster Semenya. Think about it: Semenya has had tests where she was beyond the "normal" human/female limits of testosterone and the IOC/WADA has demanded that she TAKE hormones to bring it back down. This is basically a form of eugenics and is horrifying. Has anyone from Bowerman come out with prepared statements about the wrongfulness of this application of the rule? How the rule is right 9/10 times but when it's wrong it's wrong on an innocent person and it destroyed their career (nee: life?)

There is a lot myopic thinking in this whole thing.

The common theme among the statements is that NO ONE is taking any kind of responsibility. No one FORCED Shelby to "supposedly" eat from that taco truck. The lab results didn't come out of thin air. It is the athlete and coaches' responsibility to make sure all tests come back negative so that this kind of career ending decision has no chance of occuring out of error. It's not the labs' or WADAs' or AIUs' responsibility. The blame, regardless of the reason for the positive test, lies with the athlete and the coach. Period. No one is "executing Shelby". She did this to herself. Why the f@$(k would she or any top athlete eat from a taco truck knowing that this could possibly happen!?!

So freaking suspicious. Especially with the Olympic trials and Olympics right around the corner. My gosh, I would be eating only top grade meat from pristine sources if I was a professional athlete. Highly suspect.
