Suggest that expectations are lowered for these high school standouts. Let them develop and be what they be. I’m glad that Hobbs is going to NAU because Coach Smith will develop him long-term and protect him mentally from the hype. Let’s just let it play out before we start comparing someone like him to world class runners like Jakob. It only sets it up for greater disappointment.

How much money he has, how good looking he is, what his favorite food is, who his girlfriend is, or how fast he runs? I usually use the metric of time run when I judge talent. If the question posed was, who was faster at age 17, there would be no need for a thread because it’s a fact that Jakob has run faster at the same age.
But the question is who has more talent. In case you hadn’t noticed, talent is an intangible and unquantifiable characteristic. And this is where a fully-developed brain would take the times run at the same as just one of several factors to be considered before arriving at a conclusion.
Your Logic:
Person A: Trains for 10 years; 5:33 mile at age 24.
Person B: Completely untrained; 5:38 mile at age 24.
By your logic, person A is more talented because he is faster at the same age.

So then, is it Kessler or Jakob who is more talented? You believe that it is intangible which is absolutely incorrect. If 2 people do the same training for a period of time and one runs 3:45 for a mile and the other runs 8 minutes, there is no doubt that person A is more talented. You are too limited in your capacity to reason. You give an example that you claim destroys another person's logic. But that would be impossible if talent is intangible. You are not a fan of the sport if you don't get excited about people running fast.

I have no idea if that's true or not, but I think most of us are interested in the speed with which the athlete can close a race (e.g. 1500 or 5000m), not how fast they can run a 400m fresh. At the same age, Jakob could close a 5000m in 53 seconds, two seconds faster than Kessler could close a slower-paced 2 mile. Whatever they could do fresh (and we have little idea), I would say that Jakob has the better wheels.
Don't be so scared to state an opinion. Jakob closed much faster so I believe he could run faster. Having no idea about something when you have some data and when there are literally only 2 choices is silly. Having no idea about something means that there are almost infinite possibilities.

I am pretty sure he was referring to Americans as-in "the most talented kid I have ever seen". He was not referring kid's he has never seen. Btw, it is hard to compare an athlete that has only been seriously training for 2 years versus one that has been training for training 10 years with the last 5 years with world class athletes.

Pretty hard to compare those races. Jakob was peaking in the summer months and he got out kicked. So it was a good representation of his max ability.
Hobbs on the other hand, first official 2 mile race in over a year, rust buster in March. Won by 9 seconds. Not indicative of how fast he could’ve closed.

Jakob ran the DL London 2019 5000m in around 2:36.5 per km with a last round in 53.
Hobbs ran a 2 mile in around 2:41 per km with a last round in 55 BUT STILL HAVE THE FASTESTS WHEELS?!

By the way: I am (almost) as excited as many Americans on these pages about Hobbs (and also about Teare , Young and Hocker) looking forward to see them progress in the coming years.
But somebody (not me) on this thread proposed to compare with Jakob. And at the moment all these American youngsters have some ground to cover which is quite understandable since Jakob has trained seriously (I won´t say professionally) from a very young age.
Time will tell if one or more of the 4 mentioned runners will reach Jakob´s level (top 10 all time in 1500m, 2000m and 3000m and with potential to go into top 10 at least in the 5000m and mile as well)
