Strangly, the race was run in lanes the whole way, instead the usual 200m stagger used for the 600m. It was a massive stagger and probably contributed to him not pacing the race fast enough for the record.
Pretty impressive kick, but I'm not quite sure Brazier is in the 1:42-1:41 form many were expecting for the European circuit.

Definitely not in sub 1:42 shape as everyone has been expecting.
Over a second and a half slower than he was in this year's indoor 600.
After watching Monaco and seeing Hoppel surge on Brazier in the last 50 meters was telling.
Donovan may be the best in the 800 at this moment in a disjointed season but he is not showing anything that indicates he should be in any conversation about Rudisha's record.
Donovan has finally mastered tactics and is the best in the world right now at 800 but I am less convinced now than I was last week that he can ever approach the WR.

Lol so this is a guy that goes out in 49-mid for a fast 800. Two ways he can run this:
1. Go out in 48-flat and use as little energy as possible. Then blast home a 24.7 200.
2. Get out fast AF, like 47-low and then hold it together for about a 25.5 last 200.
For Rudisha I would say #2 is his best bet. For Brazier, a 47-low would probably cook him since his 400 speed is not at Rudisha's level. His 1500 is far superior. Def go for the smooth-AF 48 flat.

Anyway I do wonder what was up with the entire race being run in lanes... I understand why it may be done for a 4x200m relay, but for an individual 600m? It takes away a lot from the race as it's very difficult for spectators to follow, and the stager is so ridiculously large it plays out more like a bunch of individual time trials happening at the same time than a race. I imagine the athletes also suffer from that dynamic as well.

The 800m and 1000m races in Monaco were run with the traditional 200m stager... the 1500m and the 5000m had no stager

And the fact remains that closing in 25.6 after a 48.09 lap is not so different from closing in 24 *high* I said, by which I intended 24.8-24.9. 24.6 is undoubtedly "24-mid." If the decimals matter so much to you ;)

Dude, 100%. I didn't really follow this and then saw the MB headline that "600m world best under threat" and knew exactly what the content would be. Endless hypothesizing of "all he needs to do" (classic to begin with) followed by "a 47.x followed by a 24.x, or a 48 flat then another 24-five" - it all falls under the same comical level of expectation that had people creaming their jocks over Brazier "maybe getting the AR" at a high school track in front of 40 people.
The 600m worlds best is very, very legit. It's not a soft worlds best at all. Rudisha, a 45.0 400m runner who obviously did quite well over 800m, tried (albeit only once or twice seriously) and did not get it. A comparative 800m time is under 1.42 so yes, this may almost have been Grays best career mark. The only two people in the last decade who have had any shot at this are Rudisha and Amos (in peak form btw) and that's because they are the only two guys who have run sub 1.42.
Brazier had a basically non-existent chance of doing this, not because "he wanted to race" or "the weather" or "covid" - but because he's not physically capable of this yet (and probably never will be). This doesn't mean he isn't the worlds best 800m runner because he is, but this wasn't going to happen and now hopefully everyone can cool off the unreal expectations on this dude.
and before the fact check police find some hole in the above, yes Rudisha ran 45.50 - not 45.0 which either way makes absolutely no difference to this discussion.
