Post-Interregional weekend update with the only person on this thread that actually knows ball (Now that I'm an alumni I can actually comment on this thing lol).
It is clear that there are two top 15 guys in the conference and then everyone else (I say top 15 and not top 10 because the chances that something weird happens at the one meet of the year that matters would not be surprising). Torty vs. Bati is going to be a great race, and to be honest I think it will come down to the wire at conference, but neither of them should be worried about that as the points are going to be more important. Either way, they're both fit and it's going to be a batter over the next few races. As for the results from the weekend, I was really impressed by what Carleton did this weekend. All the way through the field they were up on St. John's 1-5, which was a surprise, and Gabe and Indy actually ran some pretty good times and places all things considered. I do think Carleton is on track to be the second place team at MIACs, but it remains to be seen how it will play out when people truly get punched in the mouth off the line. Honestly, outside of Carleton and Cole, I really have nothing else to comment on with the MIAC from Auggie. Still, good run from them, you impressed me Carls.
As for the supposed top team in the MIAC, my Alma mater seemed to race fine at Conn. Being in the mix with some solid ranked teams was pretty good, and again they showed their depth at both Connecticut and St. Olaf. Getting Iggy back in the mix will be crucial if they want to make a serious run at another top 10 finish. I will say that this group especially likes to come into their fitness in the last few weeks, as seen in years past, and they are arguably one of the more talented teams out there. Though not the performance they had last year, it remains to be seen how they will look come November 1st, and if it can come together in these next few weeks.
Looking forward, I don't know that any other MIAC team can get into nats besides the Oles, granted that nothing crazy happens at Conference. Here are my top 4 questions I have to answer for the conference meet:
1. How close will Bati and Torty be in this race? Does Bati's weekend off help or hinder him?
2. Can Carleton give St. Olaf a challenge? If they are going to, they will likely have to strike early in the race to make the Oles uncomfortable...
3. Can one of the non team champ hopefuls push through for a top 5 finish? I am thinking of either Hootie or Cole have potential.
Let me know if anyone has another intelligent question they want answered.
As for my final thoughts, it is so clear how many of the folks in this thread have never ran at a high enough level or competed at a National Championship. November onward, especially the end of the third week, is a totally different ball game. To be frank, Nationals is unlike every other meet, and you need to be ready to get punched in the mouth right off the start line. The beauty is that times don't matter on the grass, and only the greats can hang once the pace settles and the lactic kicks in. As the weather gets cooler and the fellas get fitter, it remains to be seen who has the guts to become a true legend of the fall...
