and they got 8th in 2022 and 8th in 2021 all while Wetmore only had 6.5 scholarships for distance. I don’t think getting 19th is majorly turning the program around
And they hadn't been outside the top 10 in the two decades before that, basically. The program was run aground by Wetmore-Burroughs, they pulled the temple down on their own heads.
I blame Burroughs mainly. Wetmore should have known to stay away from anything related to BMI though. Sad that that's how he went out.
I'm at a P4...we have not signed anyone coming this fall to a 4yr scholarship. 2yrs max...and if you are atrocious in year one- that may be all you get- whether you stay at our school (and on money for yr 2 or hit the portal). We are tired of getting burned by entitlement, laziness and lack of consideration for the team over individual interests. We pay for school- at minimum you need to score at conference in some capacity. Unfortunately that's the environment we are in- we are trying to keep our jobs!

21 events x 8 scorers = 168 scorers, many of whom score in multiple events. probably more like 100-120 scorers.
P4 conferences now have 18 schools X 45 roster spots = 810 athletes.
Quite literally, +/- 700 athletes in the conference will not score each year. But the MINIMUM is scoring at conference?? If that is the criteria, we should be capping rosters at 20 athletes.
The reality is that some are young and will score eventually. Some are bad evaluations and are given money despite no real possibility of scoring. Many of those are the 10-50% scholarship athletes. Some are top 5 in xc so they have value there but have no points value on the track. That’s the reality of our sport. It probably would make sense to cut rosters to 30, reduce sports sponsorship minimums and continue to make p4 more exclusive. 45 roster spots with the possibility of giving 45 scholarships just widens the gap of haves and have nots making it possible for very few schools to ever touch the podium. They will be anointed as “the best” coaches when their comp is just 4-6 other people. They are the only ones able to play the game.

Yup, that's our minimum. Go hard or go home/ job in jeopardy. We plan to take spots in events from other schools- that's why recruiting is important. And yes, we are legit recruiting over "buying" athletes over here. Doesn't sound like this is something you have to worry about anyway. .. Also, your example doesn't work to the "T" as not every school will utilize 45 spots. 45 athletes aren't needed to perform at a high level at conference or NCAAs. I also doubt anyone will ever cap a Track & Field roster at 20...that's ludicrous.

I thought scholarships were awarded annually.
Well its no suprise that your thought is incorrect. It depends on the institution and /or conference on what is allowable.

If referring to scholarship athletes, the numbers work out that you should be scoring at conference to get a scholarship (assuming schools stick close to the old scholarship limits)
The truth is that Carlson was VINDICATED in this decision to cut half the team. Nobody that he cut has run well at any new school, and now all teams are having to cut athletes to hit the new NCAA roster limits.
