I've only run 2:06 so what do I know, but a Hall win here seemed pretty unlikely. ~3 seconds is a huge gap in 800, her PR is only about five seconds faster than KJT and she was injured. Just redlining it from the start and hoping KJT couldn't hang/kick seems like a reasonable strategy.
2:06 doesn’t mean you don’t know as well as I do! I just think it’s so easy to give up 3 seconds in your final 200 by going out 1 second too fast in the first, and her best strategy would simply have been to run as low a time as possible. That said, I don’t mean to be to critical, because I understand she was going for the gold while injured and honoring the sport and competition. Great respect to her.
Have you never run an 800? If you try to run a sub 2, you start in 27
Yeah I’ve run 1:56s where I started in 28. I don’t believe 27.7 is the best way to run ~2:01, which is what she would have needed to win.
Probably because you're a long distance guy. She didn't know she needed 2:01 beforehand. If you have a 2:02 pb you go for a sub 2, especially in this situation.
You can see at the 1200m mark JI is not in last place in the video and is still on the rail boxed in. WA website has him in last place and 0.3 s behind. Then runs 12.1 boxed in… it’s probably at most off by 1 second compared to when he was on in the video. So still fast passing 3/4 of the field on the outside, didn’t start until 300m, waving to the crowd, off under 60s pace, but not 50.6 400m.

KJT had a lifetime PB of 2:07 and she's been nowhere near that for three years. Her SB is only 2:12. When I looked earlier, I knew Hall would run at least 2:05 and I couldn't see how KJT would get near that. Pulling out a PB in the final event when going for gold is what makes an elite competitor but for me, Hall was the more likely winner going into that 800
Yes sorry, I mean that a win seemed unlikely given that KJT ran a PR and Hall has no control over that. People are saying she went out too fast and that's why she got silver. I am not sure what else she should/could have done; sit on KJT's elbow and try to out-kick her by three seconds with an injury?
They show the women's LJ for 5 minutes with the 10k in a tiny box.....then go to about 60 sec of the 10k that you can actually watch before going to commercials. NBC sucks.

NBC does suck, but it’s hard to get people interested in events where people run “tactical” and don’t put forth their best effort anymore

The 10k is 25 laps and 27 minutes long.
There are other events to focus on where the medals are being immediately decided.
