Not trolling, but just don't see the big deal that he's making out of the Crim. Who cares? He said he may not have ran the whole course, big deal. If you told me his pr, his age, other times, I could have figured it out without even talking to the guy. Not that hard.

Yes, I will wait with baited breath as well. He cheated, big mystery! The article is going to do what? That's what I thought.

What is supposed to happen when the article comes out? Is Kippy gonna talk then? Is he gonna get back into racing (the kind of racing where you actually run the whole race)? If the point of the article is to get him to stop cheating then that mission may have already been accomplished for a while. Though, if the guy just cheats because he gets off on it, then it's likely that he has been pulling the same crap for months using a different name.

Two things I've struggled with throughout this thread are:

Why this huge obsession with the holy article?

Why this utter conviction that cheating at marathons is incredibly complicated?

It's not incredibly complicated. Only a bonehead would think that.

Personally, I could care about the article. Scotth and a few others want it as they are hoping that it's peppered with their name to gain credit and be seen by many, also known as insecurity. Of course, they won't admit it.

As I understand it, the point of the article isn't to get him to start or stop cheating. That may be some letsrunners' mission and RDs' mission, but not the writer's mission

Just to be clear here, I had nothing to do with bringing this to LetsRun or any detective work on LR. After the DQ in Detroit, everyone (our team, Kips team, other runners, RD) decided to keep it to ourselves and just be done with it. Guess that didn't happen. I have followed this and previous threads but haven't posted. (Well, maybe I did early on...can't really remember) I did agree to be interviewed for the article but only if my name wasn't used. I spoke with the author for about 45 minutes on the phone last April.

I really don't care for my name being used so whoever posted it, please stop. I don't want to be associated with this thread.

Seriously guys? You are asking what the point of an article would be? As far as the New Yorker goes the point would be to sell magazines! (cue letsrun typical response: "wow you are a genius")

But seriously, I am asking myself, would Mark Singer, (or whoever is purported to be working on an article) actually be doing so- writing an article? Is this story really interesting enough to the general public that the New Yorker would want to bother with it? Indeed, just over ten years ago they gave ample space to an article by David Samuels extracted from his book "The Runner", about impostor James Hogue:

The attraction of that story being that Hogue was a runner of some talent, who used that talent to reinvent himself more than once, and ultimately was able to use it to get into Princeton before his deception finally caught up with him. One aspect that is so intriguing about the Hogue case is that he was able to pull off a very high level deception, and be rewarded with something most people can identify with- obtaining a coveted Ivy League education. The tragedy folks identify with is that a 31 year old fraud denied a coveted Princeton spot to someone much younger and more deserving. So in general there is a certain high level of drama in Hogue's story, including arrests and convictions long before the Princeton episode that make his story very intriguing and therefore marketable.

With Litton what do we have? The biggest tragedy is that he denied prize money to age group runners. I suppose folks can identify with that- a cheater and the people he hurts. But it is certainly on a different level than what Hogue did. The challenge for (... Singer? ) will be to make the story interesting enough for a very wide audience. Some time will have to be spent explaining just how hard it is to train for a marathon, let alone run in one, and the allure of qualifying for Boston for most average runners. But most importantly, the years of training and dedication that the age group runners put in and were cheated out of recognition for- that aspect really needs to be told.

The other aspect of the story which holds interest is to reveal the actual mechanics of how he got believable chip times without actually running. It's intriguing and the thread is full of possibilities- hence all the speculation (a twin?, duplicate chips?, hacking a chip?)- it's frankly a very real challenge. Just look at the Vermont City tech guy puzzling it through here- even he can't figure it out! And there are far less mats there than at Boston...

Now, now fellow trolls, Racerdb truly doesn't care about this thread, nor this Litton saga, just as you and I don't. So how about we embrace him as one of our own and continue with our true goal...that Kip is an innocent man that has been done dirty by the cowards so named in this thread.

The story is going to be about Kip's mind most likely.

This isn't a laughing matter. An innocent man's name is being drug through the mud to satisfy the twisted needs of the "people" who regularly post in this thread. I read a draft of the article and all I can say is that it is an incredible piece of journalism. It was incredibly thought provoking, deep, and really gets to the bottom of this whole fiasco.

The article will only enlighten the mindless. In the process it will make quite a few people some $$$, including Kip himself whether he needs the money or not. He made up races that didn't exist. I can do that, easily, and get away with for as long as he has, so what?

Figure it out? What's to figure out? Either he, with or without an accomplice got to mats in other ways that" just running" to get there. How did he do that? A bike, a car, or doing some "chip manipulation". That's it folks and what's so hard about that?

Think about it. There's a photo of him walking along the edge of the road in Boston (09' or 10') in an all black outfit. He's obviously crossing mats where he has to. While walking, or jogging at certain points, he doesn't appear to be a runner to the spectators who are watching the real runners.

His logic/goal, for the intellectually challenged, is to not be seen in photos while he's on the shoulder of the road and again to still cross mats where he has to. He thought he wouldn't show up in a photo at that point, but he was wrong and could not be happy when he saw that particular photo as it is quite compelling to say the least. Then he finishes, with the totally black outfit gone and even a different hat. Nothing magical about that at all folks.

The hard part would be to do it NOW, while people are watching and of course HE WON'T DO THAT! Honestly, there's nothing impressive about it at all. It's actually easy to do when no one is watching and I guarantee you that he wasn't the only one to cheat in Boston that year.

Whoever can't figure it out with all of the photos and fake races are what is puzzling to me. Look at the photos!!!!!!!!! Simple Simon. Don't let the Michigan credit grabbers fool you into thinking that it's some complex scheme. He cheated in a relay there, a 10 miler and a marathon (bayshore?). How? He cut the course. Mind boggling isn't it? The Vermont tech guy can't be very bright.
