Ole Instagram has Chris Brenk finishing sub 2:20. He continues to improve. Too lazy to look up the other times or figure out who else is in the picture. It’s safe to say he’s the top Ole. Any other MIACer run faster today?
Who has the D3 alumni record? Has anyone run faster than Noah Droddy yet - another Power-coached athlete that got much faster after leaving his program. I remember he tried to claim credit for his success when he recruited me. He even has a picture of him up in his office. He didn't have pictures of any Oles greats, which was weird.
I believe Bill Rodgers has the D3 record. And not sure why Chunko would claim any connection to Droddy’s success. He’s been on many podcasts talking about poor his high school experience was and that he really didn’t have any success until after getting a pro coach in Boulder. I don’t think he even broke 17:00 in high school.
Who’s all going to down to IL? Looks like a small MIAC preview. Are full teams attending or just top seven? Will the Gusties be able to handle racing three weeks in a row? Why are so many teams taking this weekend off?
Who will be the top MIAC team and individual? I think we’ll see Stencel narrowly edge Ihrke with a slow starting Indy closing in a sub 3 last K. However, Nick Brauer will be the top MIAC runner and start his nationally qualifying campaign. I predict Mac will be the top team at 3K, but St. John’s will pull it off.
What's the MIAC alumni marathon record? I know some Gusties and Oles are racing Chicago today. I know Devon has run 1:05 or so for the half. Not sure if he ran a full. Malcolm Richards made a few Olympic Trials. Has Munir run anything fast?
Ben Sathre I think has a couple 2:15-16 marathons. I think Mo will pass him in his next marathon, but curiously I think Sathre might be the only MIAC runner to have a runner up and win at CC nationals. Which Mo could match if he wins nats. I think Ben only won conference once though… Bati is on track to be the first 4 time champ.
Also, I think Noah Droddy has the fastest D3 alumni time, but it was not “record eligible.”
Im anxious to be corrected on any of these assertions as it is all from an admittedly fading memory.

Wintheiser was third and first XC, so not quite as good as good, but he had the team title. Not aware that he or Campbell or Escher did any fast marathons, which is kind of surprising. At least Jake Brown continues to compete in an endurance sport.
it’s sounds like the ageless Malcolm Richards is the MIAC record holder until Mo goes professional. He’s laying down one helluva marathon base right now. I suspect he’ll run 2:12 in his first pro race if Augsburg doesn’t race him to death this Spring. Not to be that guy, but he is closer to his running peak than other seniors so will be interesting to see if he can drop another few minutes before then. I’m certain he’ll run sub 2:10, but 2:08 will take a leap.
And Droddy was really a 2:11 guy that had one good day on a looped course. Nothing special these days. He did have a 61 minute half though.

I think Grant chose med school over running. I’m curious if Mo races track or skips for a spring marathon.
He did skip outdoor, but I think he had financial/academic/other issues he needed to focus on to stay on track financially/academically/etc. I know he underperforms on the track and definitely favors the roads/cc but it will be interesting if he wants to try to pad his track resume. I think he’s built for the marathon though so not sure what value another track season has.

Chris Erichsen (SJU '08) ran 2:16:31 at Grandma's in 2012. He had a couple of marathons between 2:16:30 and 2:19. Not the MIAC record but definitely notable enough to mention.

Looking forward to seeing how two different mentalities play out this week with the Gusties racing three weeks in a row and the Carls not racing for since September 21st. Both should be fighting for second place. The Carls have the talent of their big three and some pedigreed freshmen. The Gusties have steadily developed their big three seniors over several years and they have the uber-talented Brauer.
Nobody is talking about the Johnnies, the team that tends to improve the most late in the season.
Amanda Mosborg (Carleton '21) ran 2:37:16 at Boston this year. I imagine she would have Carleton's marathon PR and be in the top few women for the MIAC PR.
Nicole Porath, Gustavus Adolphus, has run 2:44. At one point she held the Indoor marathon world record and held some records for fastest half marathon running with strollers.
Has Munir raced a full? If not I’d guess Tom Sederquist has the Cobber record. Not sure he ran under 2:25 though. That’s pre-super shoes though.
Elizabeth Vitalis was a top level ultra marathoner, but that may have been too short her.
St. Scholastica had the individual women’s national champ under the old coach. I’m sure she ran a fast marathon. I’d guess Nick Mangan has the men’s record. He ran around 2:25 at Grandma’s around the same time.
After watching Coach Chunko waddle down Division St this weekend I wonder if the Oles have to pay extra for a second seat and extra-large seatbelt for him? And is doing that fiscally conservative from the head of the program?
Augsburg isn't racing this weekend? That seems weird they would race Mo in a joke of 4K, but not take him to race at Auggie. Any chance he's racing at Nuttycombe this weekend?

First you said he was being audited for wasting money, now you tell us he can afford to pay for two seats. That seems like another example of unchecked spending. Too bad Anders Cote finally graduated, he could sit Anders in the middle and use half of his seat without spending extra budget money on his excessive girth.

Yeah, Augsburg will never have the budget of Olaf/Carleton type schools. If they had more ‘team’ success, they might get do do those trips, but I know the school as a whole has really focused on keeping tuition/costs down post pandemic so unless they have a team that needs the regional competition for a nationals resume, it’d be a tough sell.

That’s why it is so refreshing to see their success with Mo. Nick could find a way to get Mo to a big time meet, but Mo doesn’t need it. And Mo is humble enough that he doesn’t want to compete away from his team. If Nick had three or four more guys just half as talented as Mo, you’d never hear about Carleton and St. Olaf again. After the job he’s done with Mo, if I’m the Olaf AD, he’d be my next pick to take over that program. Smart, humble, and fiscally responsible.
