People act like this is some foreign way to build a roster. It happens all the time in football and basketball. It’s the modern way to run a team and ncaa track fans just need to accept that if we want to be looked at like a real sport. Really tough for the athletes but life is tough.

Aside from one exception, the athletes who transferred out did so because they weren’t guaranteed a roster spot for next year. The athletic department set roster limits below the NCAA maximum. Nearly every athlete who left or was cut has transferred to a less competitive program. Every incoming recruit is stronger than the athletes who departed or were cut. Athletes who are serious about the sport—and not the party scene—thrive under him. He doesn’t tolerate party culture, and many respect that. Wetmore had 12.6 scholarships for men’s distance, but the program declined in recent years as he transitioned leadership to Heather. The program now has fewer scholarships than before. Frankly, I wouldn’t want to inherit the group that got Wetmore pushed out. It sounds like a case of underperforming athletes—who never should’ve been taken—complaining about being cut due to necessary roster limitations. Some people would apparently prefer CU avoid recruiting top talent just to keep Division III-level athletes around.
They hired their sports info person to replace Billy Nelson to recruit for the last 3 years. The guy knew nothing about running. This is the real problem for both why Wetmore got pushed out and why Carlson has to deal with getting rid of division 3 athletes from a program that expects more.

And they hadn't been outside the top 10 in the two decades before that, basically. The program was run aground by Wetmore-Burroughs, they pulled the temple down on their own heads.
The NCAA will definitely be tougher going forward than it was in the past. There will be more college transfers and more international runners at the top D1 schools, and less incoming freshman. The development of freshman/sophomores will be done mainly at lower level schools. If those freshman/sophomores develop into fast runners then they can transfer to a top level school.
But even more than that issue, Carlson is a lousy human being. Many of his runners can't stand him and some of those have transferred just to get away from him.
And as a coach of one of those lower level schools, if we are providing a full and a kid wants to skip out after developing to a 'top level school' (who is only 'top level' because they have $), I'll be pissed.
Just being honest.
As a parent of D1 athletes, my view is that if you can cut an athlete for not being fast enough (as opposed to injuries), they should be able to transfer if they have a better situation available. If it’s cutthroat it has to go both ways. Don’t hate the game.
Rather than roster limits, I’d much prefer a system where teams are capped ay how many they can bring in each year, but no one can ever be cut as long as they are doing their part to try.
Doing their part to try? Pretty subjective criteria to not be cut. Athletes can leave via the portal. Coaches should be able to cut whoever they want. All scholarships should be one year contracts. There are way too many people that want their kids in competitive d1 programs but don’t want little Bobby to have to prove himself. Little Bobby never learns!
Cuts were made and ones that are not on another school's roster face difficulty. Turns out that runners on the roster do not count against the new number limitations.
I think that if the judge had not pushed this position the athletes affected would have had grounds to sue and a reasonable chance of success. So the judge likely saved the NCAA and the Schools/Suing Athletes a lot of needless problems and maybe two years of massive disruption.
Well if an athlete is cut they don't retain their scholarship,right, so the four years is conditional in some sense. Also if anything athlete has a partial scholarship what is the guarantee? I think track and field as well as XC use Partial Scholarships a fair bit.
