I don't know why we need to sugarcoat the joke. It was absolutely a piece of racist, dark humor. He's a comedian, comedians say dark sh!t for laughs sometimes, that doesn't make them racist. I don't have a problem with it because I'm not some emotionally fragile, immature crybaby who needs to control what others say and think in order to have a completely sanitized world where nobody says anything that hurts my feelings ever. If you don't like Rogan's style of dark humor, don't listen to him - and don't listen to Dave Chappelle or George Carlin or any other controversial comic. You can go ahead and watch Trevor Noah make millions of dollars telling everybody how much of a victim he is and how horrible white people are on a daily basis.

No, the reason JR won't feel an ounce of weight for this joke is because normal people can parse the difference between someone making an offensive joke (which by definition, is not something that is meant to be taken seriously) and an actual bigot. Maybe ask yourself - does Joe Rogan view his step-daughter, his black coworkers, his black friends, his black podcast guests or all black as "apes" or was he just making an offensive joke over a decade ago?

I was always pretty troubled by it, too. But then I read Biden's autobiography. He uses the "clean" reference a couple times, as I recall, meaning politicians that are not corrupt.

If we can convince our population that they must accept associating with despicable people it opens the door for those people to take power.

The USA has the strongest commitment to free speech in the world. It's what allows us to organize boycotts and speak with our $. There is nothing more American than that.
