At each water stop Galen Rupp chucked off his old soaked hat and grabbed a new one from his coach. Rules?

It's a report from a newspaper. The reporter has no idea of the logistics of aid stations at marathons and he didn't bother to ask because he thinks it's completely logical that you can crew your runner every 5k. If there were actually ice in those caps, don't you think it would have come tumbling down his face when he put the cap on?

I once ran a marathon in freezing cold weather and wore a willy warmer (I have a rather large appendage so requires a constant high volume warm blood flow) and changed it every 10k for a battery pre heated one and there wasn't any problems or protests.

I think you missed the bit about:

The problem with that claim is that ice melts. The hats would have been out on a table before the run started, and likely three or more hours before use. At that point you doing nothing put putting a soggy hat on your head. But, Rupp's hat looke dry when he put the new iced ones on.

I only briefly scanned the IAAF Rules - can someone point me the rule that specifically disallows athletes from changing cloths during a road race? I always assumed there was a rule that you were stuck with what you had on at the start, but, I must admit that I do not know why I thought that. When I read through them, I could find no direct rule to prevent it. I should say that I also did not see a similar prohibitive rule with regard to Mountain Races (rule 251) yet I've always assumed they could change cloths in a mountain race. Not sure why I assumed you couldn't change in a road race but could in a mountain race.

Again, just went through briefly, but if there is a specific rule I would love to read it.

You can change gear at established points, and everyone is allowed the same benefit. In mountain races you can even have a helper.

In track, road races, triathlons, you are on your own. No helpers allowed. In triathlons you can only change clothes at two points as far as I am aware.

Ya, i do know who Ken Goe is but he didn't do any digging in asking how those caps got out there did he? You have obviously never tried to get around a marathon course?

..and if there was actual ice in those caps, the whole world would have known it.

Please identify where are athlete was given aid brought to an aid station by their coach. Not a single coach, or their personal minions, on the course at any time.

Its been posted multiple times already. You can buy simple ice packs that cool down via a chemical reaction. You don't need an ice chest. You don't need someone to sneak them onto the course at the last second. You don't need to do anything besides put them in the hat's sweatband and let them cool via the reaction.

I get the fact it's more fun to keep the crazy conspiracy going but people are over complicating this way too much. This took minimal pre-race planning. Don't over think it.

The claim seems to be that no cooler box was used. Dry ice (CO2) sublimates (solid to gas with no liquid phase) faster than ice melts.

In Ironman triathlons you can change clothes at each transition (swim-bike and bike-run), but also people will sometimes change clothing at the bike special needs and/or run special needs). People sometimes like dry socks, dry shorts, dry hats, etc...

You ignore that there was an individual assigned to had out the special cooling gear to Rupp. Rupp got a hat extended out to him at the designated USA section of the aid station. That person promptly left the aid station, leaving as Ward and Meb were approaching.
