Listen, the report clearly states Brosnan and the parent never discussed recruiting. The parents only asked about the portal, and Brosnan said, "Once you’re in the portal, we can talk about that." That’s exactly what the NCAA expects coaches to do. Since there are no texts, emails, or social media contacts before the portal, there’s no violation. The NCAA openly admits they found nothing. Now they’re claiming coaches can’t talk to athletes at other schools, which is complete bullsjit and dangerous misinformation. Brosnan had a proven pre-existing relationship with these parents, so the NCAA is essentially fabricating a conversation and accusing them without any proof. On top of that, what they’re doing is downright illegal.

Prospect 1 entered the transfer portal on December 12, 2022, and prospect 2 entered on January 2, 2023. Two of Brosnan’s 11 phone calls with prospect 1’s father occurred at 10:25 p.m. and 11:07 p.m. on December 11, 2022, the night before prospect 1 entered the portal. Prospect 1’s father initiated both calls. Brosnan then initiated a phone call to prospect 1’s father the following day. The call concluded 13 minutes before prospect 1 entered the portal. Prospect 1’s father then called Brosnan three minutes after prospect 1 entered the portal.

That’s not a violation , you can call friends. A for effort though
If you’ve had calls with someone in the past and even fairly regularly its not a violation, especially the NCAA mentioned Brosnan even spent a holiday with one of the dads and his family, which is a pretty significant pre - existing relationship. Like others have pointed out, it’s wrong to assume what people discuss during these interactions if you’re not actually aware of the conversations and facts. Plus, both the dads and Brosnan confirmed they NEVER talked about recruiting, so it’s illegal to claim otherwise. The key point here is that there was no tampering involved at all. Just the NCAA making false claims about a conversation.

You didn’t know the NCAA can tell you what you said and who to talk to? You didn’t know that ?
Here are the relevant facts directly from the report:
1. UCLA compliance told Brosnan it is a violation to talk to their parents. 2. Brosnan CONTINUED to talk to their parents and once he was informed it was against the rules. 3. Brosnan had phone calls with the parents NEAR MIDNIGHT the day before the athlete entered the portal, more calls MINUTES BEFORE the recruit entered the portal, and MINUTES AFTER the athlete entered portal. This is not a coincidence. 4. One recruit admitted that Brosnan told the parent he wanted her to join her team. This is recruiting language and constitutes tampering since it was prior to joining the portal.
5. Brosnan's own lawyer admitted that Brosnan's refusal to cooperate had nothing to do with the imaging of the phone.
To summarize - Brosnan was informed that talking to the parents was a violation and he continued to do it. Those conversations were clearly demonstrated to have been about recruiting those athletes, and one of the athletes even ADMITTED IT.
This is the most clear cut tampering case in the history of the NCAA. Brosnan is GUILTY
This entire case is nothing but a damn scam. Brosnan never even mentioned recruiting, and everyone agrees on that. The NCAA is desperately clutching at straws, trying to turn nothing into something. After going through the case, there's zero evidence of any tampering—it's unbelievable how corrupt the NCAA is. Brosnan should absolutely appeal—how the hell can they hand out a violation with no evidence at all? These pre-existing relationships are legitimate; Brosnan has known these fathers long before UCLA. An appeal and a lawsuit are inevitable. Nobody can tell someone who they can or can't talk to outside of work. The bylaws are not just misguided, they're outright breaking the law. The NCAA is making up evidence- by saying anyone talked about recruiting
The NCAA itself admitted that both fathers said they never spoke about recruiting, so no tampering actually happened. One of the fathers even spent holidays with Brosnan and his wife, which is just a clear sign of a genuine, pre-existing friendship. The other father does church work and asked Brosnan about his daughter transferring , but Brosnan responded with, “I can’t talk to you about that until she’s on the portal.” That’s exactly how the NCAA says these situations should be handled. Since both parents confirmed there was no further discussion, it really shows Brosnan followed protocol perfectly. This was 100% no tampering, and it’s obvious if you look at the facts. On top of that, the NCAA taking 8,000 files from Brosnan’s phone is a massive deal and caused a big delay in the interview process. That’s a huge problem for the NCAA itself. They are essentially breaking the law twice: calling normal communication outside of work a violation, even though they know no recruiting talk happened, and illegally seizing Brosnan’s personal phone data. It’s pretty clear the NCAA messed up big time here.
I'll give you this, Sean, you're persistent! One wonders where you find the time between all your lawsuits and spending so much time in front of the mirror doing your hair.
The NCAA didn’t break the law, they stink but aren’t that dumb.
Usually when employed at a public university part of your contract is a small stipend to pay for your phone plan. Accepting it and saying your phone will be used for school purposes gives them the ability to search it later.
I’ve signed these contracts every year!!!
The ncaa also DOES NOT CARE about an assistant coach for a track and field program!!!! We do, they do not. There was no witch hunt, they were probably annoyed an investigation into track transfers was going on.
