I don't know Carlson, I couldn't pick him out of a line up if he was wearing his new Buffs gear. I will defend what he's done. He obviously has an idea of how many guys would follow him to Boulder and where he thinks they would fit on the current team.
He has a one time opportunity to create space and bring in talent not currently on the team. He used it and did it as fast as possible to give what little opportunity he had time for to the guys he was cutting. The administration did no favors to the athletes or the previous coaching staff by not getting rid of Wetmore sooner and starting this process earlier.
The writing has been on the wall since the report was released, if I was a mid-tier athlete on the team and my development was more important than staying part of the "Boulder Community" I would have sought out a more stable situation in the transfer portal at the end of the season before finding out who the new coach was. That's how the sport is set up now. Coaches that have time and capacity to develop 4:15 milers into guys that may one day be pro/semipro are in D3 if you've got the academics or go to a Wisconsin state school.
For the guys who were cut, life is tough and not fair. It's a tough time in your life to learn that lesson and easy to feel bad for these guys, but they weren't looking at the situation objectively.

Probably the last comment I will leave on this thread, but it needs to be said in response this and I left it out of my original post: the athletes (at least the scholarship ones) signed a four year commitment to THE SCHOOL, not to Wetmore or Carlson. Many of the upperclassman may have signed these scholarships before the transfer portal or NIL even existed.
What Carlson wants to buy, oops I meant "build", at CU is irrelevant. I'm sure he wouldn't like it if 2 months from now his 4 year (let's say for the sake of argument) contract was just ripped up and he was told "oh well too bad, good luck finding a new job in 15 days."
These are grown men you are talking about not 10 year olds so cut it with the "life isn't fair" BS. When we are dealing with contract law it absolutely ought be fair and I hope athletes start taking these scumbag coaches to court over this crap.

Neither scholarships nor roster spots are guaranteed for four years, silly rabbit.

When you sign an NLI, you agree to attend the institution listed on the NLI for one academic year in exchange for that institution awarding athletics financial aid for one academic year.

If Carlson is fired early, his contract has terms related to his remaining compensation that he agreed to so yeah, good luck finding a new job. Scholarships have the same fine print, and athletes should not be surprised that this could happen. The compliance officers and administrators at the school are not allowing "scumbag coaches" to break the law. As stated many times in this thread, athletes that signed a commitment to the school will have that commitment honored, but their time with the team has ended.
Everyone's athletic career ends at some point. It's up to these guys to figure out if they have a next step, but new coaches are not responsible to honor previous coaches commitments. There's definitely not a legal issue here, but every athlete a coach interacts with creates a reputation for future athletes to have to consider in their choices.
Anyone upset should blame Wetmore for being inappropriate and the AD for not acting quicker.
If Carlson was such a hotshot coach shouldn't he be able to coach up the athletes currently on the roster? Guess he's afraid to put in that kind of work, and he'll bring in international ringers instead.

It isn't funded by the taxpayers. Colorado residents partially fund the cost for instate students. The school also has an endowment of $2.2B. Donors fund a large part of the school. Instate students pay roughly 1/2 of their cost. But 33% are out of state students and they pay the full price. It is a business.
The big thing is the land, I believe the state still owns/could revoke the land if they feel the university has violated the charter granting the land.
CU wouldn't be able to find enough space in a desirable location if their current campus got revoked.
Yeah, the legislature and electorate will rise up and smite CU for arrogantly not keeping some local slugs on the pencil neck cross country team.
The headline here is not the main point but the info is in the article, but yes the P4 conferences do guarantee four year scholarships in many cases now. I'm not gonna go revealing my personal info here but I have read many myself. These scholarships have to be given out even if the athlete is cut. And these guys aren't 8:40 3k runners. Some of the athletes Carlson left high and dry at Tennessee ran around that for the 3200m.
If these athletes were in scholarship, they will keep it. They just won’t be in the team. Their scholarship commitment is not tied to their roster spot.

The way the NCAA screwed over athletes relating to compensation was "legal" for 50 years yet they are still having to pay back multi 10 figure sums because of lawsuits. Funny how that works right?
What these coaches are doing may not currently violate the NCAA by-laws as the are currently written, but is is absolutely morally bankrupt and precedent from Alston and the more recent NCAA cases doesn't bode well for your side.

I'm aware of how it works as I've outlined in previous comments, but I'm arguing that coaches shouldn't be allowed to operate in this way. Yes athletes can technically keep their scholarships, but there are a lot of non-scholarship benifits tied into being an athlete that they will lose such as their meal plan, access to counseling services, any NIL stipend, ect.
It's not just a roster spot and coaches know this. There are some lower income athletes who would not be able to afford food without these benifits and I rightfully called Carlson and those like him scumbags because they are well aware of this fact and take full advantage of it. The purpose of cutting them is to pressure them into the transfer portal (which I have already explained is not as simple as the braintrust here likes make it seem) and free up money. Is this technically within the purview of the NCAA rules? Yes, but again so was banning athletes from operating YouTube channels just 4 years ago.
Just like those policies, this behavior is immoral and violates the spirit of the new 4 year scholarship rules the power 4 has implemented. Laugh all you want but it would certainly not be the most unreasonable grounds for a lawsuit against the NCAA.
No rules were broken and nobody cares. Millions read about the football players. Hundreds would read about the runners. And they are quietly moving on anyway.
Carlson has current Tennessee athletes and recruits on the way to campus for a visit today. As was mentioned in the first thread about him, these athletes were contacted last Thursday which is the day he announced he was leaving to the team and before they would have been able to have their paperwork processed to enter the portal.
There were/are definitely some illegal things going on with what he is doing besides just being a POS!
What meals does Colorado provide? One ler day? If that will break a person, they should have gone to work rather than college. Maybe this does them a favor by getting them out of debt sooner.

Since you asked...they get to use this 3 meals a day at least 5 days per week.
