OR - Looks very unlikely I will be at the 20 miler Sunday.
Took a bad spill this afternoon and landed hard on my left knee, which is all swole up. Can barely stand up and shuffle right now, so running a hard 20 in 36 hours would take a small miracle.
Hoping this isn’t a bone bruise and that I’ll still be able to run the marathon in 23 days.
Sub 6:00 - So sorry to hear of this...really. I have been looking forward to meeting you. Get well soon, my friend.
Sub 6- spill running or on a bike?
It’s bizarre. This is the third September in a row where I’ve taken a hard spill and busted my left knee. (Never had this sort of injury otherwise in the 20+ year of running.)
We’ll find another race at some point. Hopefully Boston 2019 will work out. Or maybe I’ll wake up tomorrow and the swelling will be way down. Will let you know if it’s somehow better.
Running. Half a mile to go through an afternoon shuffle on a beautiful day.
Sorry to hear that man. Hope it heals up quickly.

Well everytime I see your name I just think "dang he must be hairier than those old rabi's I use to work with" Maybe it's triggering a racial flag on the board?
Forgot to ask are you part wookie?
Sorry to hear about the knee Sub 6:00. If you end not going to the race, that will make two of us that had to cancel racing this weekend. I had a sudden spasm or cramp in my soleus on my right leg this past Wednesday. It was bad enough that I think it caused a mild strain. This is not something I can train through without making it worse, so there will be no running for at least a week. I'll try to maintain what fitness I have with cross training. Just when I was looking forward to running in some cooler weather.

+1.

gfmah - Let me know how that Acme, Inc. training plan looks when it arrives. Interested to see what it looks like.
Looking tough, to be honest. First workout is 5 x giant anvil drop with accordion walk recovery. We'll see how it goes.
Actually, no big plan, really. Kind of an anti-big-plan approach if anything. Very un-Coyote in that regard (hopefully). Historically, the thing that's worked the best for me in the past has been a pretty unstructured approach where I just do whatever I feel like doing on a given day, and do it primarily by feel, but with an idea of trying to keep balance in my training as I go along and building up fitness gradually over time. Primary emphasis on endurance, but looking to do something for strength, something for speed, something for hill work, something for recovery in a given week (however long a week might be...). And then a race or time trial something like once a month, probably looking mostly at shorter stuff for the time being. Kind of like perpetual base-building in a sense.
Coach Jeff: Congratulations on the race - another nice chunk of improvement for you! In terms of comparing the pace/effort thing to science/religion, maybe to some degree, but I would point out that a guy like Magness puts a pretty heavy emphasis on mindfulness and focusing on process over outcome. See also the sports psychologist that too hot cited. Not to say that either one of them is a strictly by feel guy - and I'm not really, either - but there does seem to be support for the wisdom of feel/effort coming from the science-y end of things, especially in terms of mental preparation and performance. (By the way, did you hear about the dyslexic agnostic insomniac? He stayed up all night wondering if there really was a dog.)
Sub 6: Sorry to hear about the knee - being a total klutz, I've done that more times than I care to remember. Hope it recovers quickly. (And sorry to hear about the tweaked calf, too, SI.)
That was kind of the answer I was anticipating from you. And I think it is a great answer. In my mind, this is the true middle ground of the effort/pace approach. This is the style of training I think both too hot and I (and many other coaches) would advocate. In fact, this is a lot of what I am doing right now as I build toward Houston.
I very much look forward to the results of the races you jump into on the training you write as you go.
And that’s a pretty damn good joke, haven’t heard that one...
SI - Sorry too to hear about the tweak. Best wishes on a speedy recovery.
Sub6, SI sorry to hear about the tweaks. Hopefully they're no big deal and go away quickly.
Waiting on RRRs race report.
Thanks, all.
Plenty of swelling this morning and not very mobile, but also not in a ton of pain. I’ll take that as a good sign, but not a good enough sign that I’d be running a marathon in 22 days. But I’ll still be there since my wife is running the half. She’s off attempting a 12 miler at the moment (until August she’d never gone further than 10k).
When this happened last year, it was on a trail the day before I was in a wedding, and I was in a good deal of pain that next day. (Some of that was from other scrapes.) Opted to treat it on my buddy’s wedding day with bro medicine by crushing too many beers (since I’m not going to mix a moderate amount of alcohol with OTQ pain medication). At least I was back jogging within 3 weeks of that spill, and without any problems by 8 weeks.
Two years ago when I did something like this, I pushed it coming back a little too soon (maybe 2 weeks) and wound up with PF syndrome, which put me out about 6 months. Really want to avoid that.
SI - Sorry to hear you’re also out this weekend.
Here is my race report
A picture is worth a thousand words.

You the man, RRR! And congrats to you too, Coach Pap. You guys are a great team.
On a personal note, your training and makeover of late, RRR, is what has really inspired me to get back in the game myself. I wanted to thank you and acknowledge you for your inspiration and enthusiasm. Really looking forward to what we can do in Houston...
RRR -- Sweet success! Congratulations! Picture perfect ... Also, great coaching, pappy.
OR -- Good luck and have fun tomorrow. A quick check of the forecast looks pleasant - high 60s and sunny?
Sub 6 - Sorry to read about your setback. Bounce back soon!
Lots of other comment-worthy stuff this week, but no time ... But looking forward to tomorrow's reports. And marathon season has me inspired ... especially as I follow the sub-3 chasers!
Good job RRR. Splits?
