Under the IAAF rules, these stations are for refreshment and "refreshment" language is defined, but also vague.

What this thread asks has to do with actual running gear/equipment that the runner does not line up with. This issue now opens the door to any replacement gear being offered at 5km increments in sanctioned Olympic marathons.

The only way to make it work is like triathlons where every athlete enters a transfer station and is entirely on THEIR OWN to change their own equipment. The marathon becomes a NASCAR event at that point.

Except it is. Because it just happened.

Again. If ANYONE with half a brain even cared about this, they would've made a rule clarification or a statement regarding it to avoid situations like this in the future. Since nobody did, nobody cares.

We call it precedent from here on out. Anyone claiming this has happened for years in an Olympic marathon is misrepresenting the facts. When people bend rules and exploit the grey, it becomes an area to address by changing the ruling or further exploiting it. A bronze medalist in the 2016 Men's Olympic marathon had new hats given to him systematically every 5km on the course. Ice hats for all in 2020, fine.

I once worked and elite aid station for a marathon. The athletes were required to put their bottle in the specified box for each aid station. From there, the aid station workers would hand them out.

It looked to me like rupp had attached the cap to his bottle with tape or a rubber band. It's just like attaching a gel to the bottle. He then put the bottle in the specific box and it was handed to him. There were no logistics by Al Sal required.

Could have very easily been what a poster noted a few pages back. You can buy packs that do not need to be frozen and stay cold via a chemical reaction. So all there is to it is putting a few packs in the sweatband of each hat before strapping the hats to the bottles. I would imagine Galen was drinking room temp fluids so all of this could have been done the day before when everything may have been prepped. I really do not think there was any special last minute timing on this. All of it could have been done no differently than if Rupp was just getting a regular bottle with nothing attached.

All of this conspiracy theory sneaking around and placing bottles at the very last second is pretty absurd. The exact same thing could be achieved with minimal logistics.

No, because there is no way it will be allowed. It is too complicated to manage for a large number of runners. Coaches are not allowed to be on course to get this done. So who is responsible, the race organizers?

So sunglasses taped to a bottle will be good in 4 years. Chuck the glasses to the maddening crowd and grab a new pair attached to a bottle every 5km. The arms can be filled with chemically engineered cooling gel. Sweet! Love a good precedent!

NOP hired an experienced marathoner to relay the hats to Rupp, one that is experienced in finding quick transport along a marathon course. Dr. Kip Litton, DDS was the Man Of The Hour for Rupp's medal bid.
