and it's not like Jurek is a 5000 track guy. That's the kind of terrain he has done many races on.

Jurek also had a huge advantage in going second, knowing exactly how much he needed to do each day, etc, plus he had more assistance.

hell, he might have even Rossied the course.

my opinion of Jurek has gone way, way down because of this.

Might have run it faster if he didn't take so many damn pictures.

you simply cannot take an effort like this and put it on the LRC message board without it being diluted by the toxicity inherent here.

If he did does the record still count?

Absolutely not. Scot followed the correct AT trail there. Delorme map was incorrect in that section.

Many races on the terrain? Where? What races? I will list his major wins and if they meet the same terrain as the AT.

Badwater. Nope

Western States. Nope.

Hardrock. Maybe (see the Karl Meltzer video where he says the AT in Maine is harder than Hardrock due to the technical and the ascent)

Leadville (2nd place) Nope.

Spartathlon. Nope

Course for 24 hr American Record. Nope.

I don't care who you are. Its not easy to go out there and do 40+ miles a day on technical, hiily trails. NOTHING prepares you for over a 300 mile week that first week. Then to do that for the next 6 weeks after that...on the elevation and technica nature of the AT. Amazing.

As I said before, a 2:10 marathon on a road course with 350 feet of ascent isnt gonna mean shit on the AT. The first mile of the AT will make you laugh at Heartbreak "Hill".

The Delorme map has been off in lots of places, at least if I'm reading it correctly when I zoom down to the highest level of detail. A lot of places where I know the AT goes directly over a summit the Delorme shows it passing to the side. Stuff like that. That's to be expected, it's a footpath through the forests! There also have been plenty of places where the track shown for Jurek jumps across sections of the trail, which I assume is just bad batteries or loss of signal.

When comparing Jurek to any of the previous record holders, and future FKT attempts as well, it's important to keep in mind that the trail changes regularly. Jurek's route this year is believed to be about 8 miles longer than the previous record. Take those 8 miles away and maybe he's 4-6 hours faster. Not that that matters to me over a 46+ day effort.

I have never been on the AT, but the terrain in the I-90 corridor where Scott did most of his training at his peak is loaded with technical terrain, even if most of his races were more straightforward.

It's so cult-ish to not eat dead animal flesh that's been cut, processed, packaged, and cooked for you to eat. I follow the work of Dr. Paleo, and I feel primal when I go to Costco to get my 12-pack of Meatball Hot Pockets. It's similar to what our ancestors did.

And Jurek would have to win at least two more ultramarathons for his book to have any credibility.

He was good in his prime but there is a new wave of ultra runners who are much more talented, and therefore more fast. The sport is young and the exponential curve will leave him behind. He has been a great ultra runner but this latest effort isn't something that should be on the same resume as his other achievements. Also, here's another thought: Other ultra runners will be hesitant to do the AT record attempt because they have other, more running related, fish to fry and know it's a bad idea to thrash your body with a 2000 mile trail jiggle
