After all of these years? huh? Try back in 1989 (that's 24 years ago) when track writer Jim Ferstile approached me about the AW shenanigans. I told him that I don't have the smoking gun but I could give him a blueprint, a summary and time-line and the names of the people he needed to interview, which ones would cooperate, which ones won't, and what kinds of questions to ask, what information I have that I know to be true, which info I think to be true, which info I think not to be true, and which I know not to be true, where the walls of omerta would be found, and the names of the people who I thought would step up and do the right thing. etc. I did not give him gossip and rumor, I gave him the entire package hoping he could sort it out.

Are drugs in play in Oregon now, I don't know. No one can know. I first learned of the AW crap in the spring of 1980 when three AW runners told me they were on steroids and they already knew there wouldn't be testing at the 80 trials to nowhere. I didn't get any more info (nor did I ever care) until May of 1985 when I just happened to be at the 19th street cafe with a group of friends, tables merged and Stewart Togher (not sure of spelling), throws coach at UO, gave a clinic on drugs in track and field.

You haven't thought this through. If you tell more people how do you know they won't make it public?

My sister has had her knee replaced and meniscus surgery on the other one. She has never run a step in her life. Most meniscus surgeries are for people who've never run a step in their lives. Meniscus surgeries are among the most prevalent of all surgeries.

* Meniscal injuries may be the most common knee injury. The prevalence of acute meniscal tears is 61 cases per 100,000 persons.

* The overall male-to-female incidence is approximately 2.5:1. The peak incidence of meniscal injury for males is in those aged 31-40 years. For females, the peak incidence is in those aged 11-20 years.

* In patients older than 65 years, the rate of degenerative meniscal tears is 60%. Surgical procedures of the meniscus are performed on an estimated 850,000 patients each year.

As a runner, other than Osgood's schlatters when I was 15 years old, and whacking my knee into a barrier at the 1975 nationals, I've never even had a sore knee.

I first tweaked my knee skiing. Then again using my knee as a fulcrum get a refrigerator "just right" in place. First surgery. Months later it needed to be redone. My surgeon said he had about a 1 in 400 failure rate. I was the one. Fixed Surgery #2. Then I was crawling under my desk at work dealing with computer cable, all the while protecting my "bad knee" when I tore the meniscus on my "good knee" Surgery #3. Finally, I got so used to surgeries that when my #3 knee starting "clicking" i felt I knew what needed to be done and got surgery #4. In retrospect I wished that I wasn't proactive on that and just let it go. The rehab program on #4 was clearly aggravitng the knee, but I stayed away from the doctor. However, after stepping off a curb in Times Square I shredded it for good, making the decision for me. Surgery #5.

There are at least 20 people who already know most of the facts. They have skin in the game. That's what keeps them in check.

A Duck might have known, but I doubt it. He seems to be someone who is parroting bits and pieces of information to suit his needs. If he was in Eugene at all it would have been in the late 70s, not mid 80s.

Has anyone been talking to you about replacement knees and if so what have you thought? I ask because I've had suggestions about doing it.

At this point it's knee singular. It scares me though. Basically they amputate your leg and splice it back together.... I'm going to faint now.

Though in my last rehab there was an old guy who had both knees replaced at the same time and was in rehab 3 weeks later. I was impressed.

Here is a canadian documentary that discusses some of the points malmo brings up regarding Athletics West doping

I was already well beyond squeamish about it. I've been hobbling along the streets doing an impression of running and had people stop me to say, "Don't let them replace your knees, I had it done and it made things worse." The father of a girl in my son's second grade class (ten years ago), died during knee replacement surgery and my kids' high school track coach had it done specifically so he could play golf again only to have the doctor tell him it hadn't worked and he'd never be able to play golf again. I hadn't thought about the "amputate your leg and splice it back together" bit. I'll faint with you.

I have a candidate that fits all the other criteria and this dude is genuinely crazy, thinks he's important and connected, is the biggest name dropper ever, and loves to mess with people. Not asking you to give your candidate Duck's name but am very curious to know three things:

-where he lives now;

-what he does now / has recently done for a living;

-whether he ever ran track for U of O.

At this point I'm leaning in the direction of believing that Duck's biography as he has given it on this site is a collage of information about other people. If that's the case, he's got serious mental health issues and I don't really care who he is.

On the other hand, if your guy actually fits a lot of the particulars Duck has given, he's probably our guy, and in that case I'd be interested in hearing his side of things [whether he chooses to give his name or not.]

I could be wrong, but I don't read malmo's comments to mean that UO athletes were using PEDs in the 80s (I may also be misreading what you are saying, and you may be referring to the elite Eugene track scene in general).

It'll be 6 weeks post-op for me tomorrow. Yes, the surgery is gross to think about. I was awake for my ACL replacement but I don't think I could ever watch a knee replacement. Rehab's going good, I have more range of motion than before. Still quite a ways to go to be "back", but most of my day to day is pretty normal now.

I should have done it last year, so if you're dealing with a lot of mobility problems I'd recommend going for it. I waited too long.

Now I won't be doing running training ever again, but you know I'm not the same body type as you are. Dick Beardsley is running on his, so he's a better example for you. If not I can point you to so some good swimming training sites. ;-)
