If Carlson was such a hotshot coach shouldn't he be able to coach up the athletes currently on the roster? Guess he's afraid to put in that kind of work, and he'll bring in international ringers instead.
Although D1 guy decades ago, I never showed in interest in a career focused on coaching or athletics.
And I certainly don’t understand the current D1 landscape as regards non revenue sports.
So the question I have is whether this kind of broad scale action works? In my experience there are dividends to be recognized with loyalty being delivered in both directions. Note that this doesn’t mean a coach cannot reduce roster size. Rather what is the long term impact to doing something like this all at once? Will in state recruiting be affected? Colorado is no slouchy state. The answer may be this an entirely new age and things have to be done differently, and cutting this many all at once may be unavoidable.
What impact will this have on a 9 minute high school two miler? Many an All American has come from this background.
My friend a retired mid major and then Big 10 coach thinks this action is highly risky. But we are from another generation.
Not coming to any conclusions- especially since the coach is from North Central where Al Carious was beyond fantastic in his leadership of runners. But a good question to ask, especially since some of the athletes chose Colorado for the school and athletics, in an area where there are not a lot of very good schools to choose from.
These are great questions. As both a parent of a kid going through the recruiting process and as a former D1 athlete, I can tell you this will absolutely impact recruiting. Top HS recruits will steer clear of a coach like this for multiple reasons. 1. Nobody wants to live in fear that if they get injured or sick one season that their coach would flippantly cut them from the team. 2. Team culture will suffer in an environment with continuous turnover. 3. The timing of cutting these 9 kids shows a total lack of empathy from the admin and coach. It’s unbelievable they’d put these kids in this position weeks before school starts. Kids who want to be great need to feel fully supported as a human. These actions will affect the morale of the remaining team members and will absolutely deter top recruits who have many options.
There might be a short term bump in performance, but long term, this will absolutely destroy Colorado’s program.
All of what you’re saying is good and well and very much more on the correct side of things.
but what you’re leaving out is that Carlson doesn’t need HS recruits in this era, that’s where things have changed especially at the P4 level. You speak of loyalty look at all the damn loyalty on the transfer portal, you gotta be kidding me. So Carlson will have plenty to choose from on the portal and internationally. This is where it’s at now, Hs athletes won’t matter until they go somewhere and prove themselves. If you’re a mid major coach consider yourself the new Juco.
Why does everyone keep missing the point on the 17 cross roster number with track at 45? If a program has track there is no additional 17 for xc. The 17 for xc is ONLY if the program has NO track program!!!!!!!
You are confused. The athletic department is a business under the college which is a business. Microsoft pays its janitors even though they lose money by doing it. But the janitors keep the place clean which ultimately contributes to the overall profitability. The XC team carries a reputation for the school and it typically has students with better than average GPAs. These things contribute to the school's reputation which causes better students to apply. Better students get better jobs and then make larger donations. It is all a business. You don't know how to run a business.
Untrue. Many of the top track programs I'm the NCAA are not good at XC. They can have 45 guys in track and a different 17 in XC. People have been asking for the scholarships to be separated. Everyone got their wish.

CU Boulder is a public institution funded by the state taxpayers (albeit poorly) whose mission is not to make money, but to serve the public interest.
It isn't funded by the taxpayers. Colorado residents partially fund the cost for instate students. The school also has an endowment of $2.2B. Donors fund a large part of the school. Instate students pay roughly 1/2 of their cost. But 33% are out of state students and they pay the full price. It is a business.

The big thing is the land, I believe the state still owns/could revoke the land if they feel the university has violated the charter granting the land.
CU wouldn't be able to find enough space in a desirable location if their current campus got revoked.

Good moring coach Carlsen. Did you miss the part where the 13:59 guy you cut had the highest GPA on the team? Also no one is applying to CU Boulder because seven 25 year old Kenyans finished 2 places higher at NCAAs than the Americans would have, that is an absolutely ridiculous statement and you know it.

No way that is accurate. It would be ridiculous and force track first programs to cut XC so they could have enough track athletes.
