In Coopers case, going for the standard in the prelim probably cost her top 3 in the final. It is a risky game. You have to save something for the final.

Yes, she needs to run “just enough” to make the finals. Then in the finals “let ‘er rip” to get the standard (and hopefully top-3).

This is correct. Also, Tuohy officially has ZERO races to qualify for the 5,000 as the NCAA cross country meet does not count toward qualifying. Unless she can somehow race 5 times between now and June 30, the only way she would accrue enough points would be to hit the qualifying standard anyway.

Your overall point is correct that the only realistic way to qualify is a 14:52 and top 3 at trials, but why would her 15:15 at USA's last year not count? Is there some other criteria than being in the window?

I don't claim to know the ins and outs but I see Cranny has a rank in road to Paris with 3 5000 m results.

I think the 5000m only needs 3 events to be ranked (and one can be 3000 / 2 mile) and 1500m needs 5 (including mile and road mile).
If Tuohy could get (or have gotten) into a diamond league and place(d) decently that'd help her a lot: 4th gives 120 bonus points and 9th (more likely, especially in a weaker field) gives 55th which turns a 15:03 outdoors (1157) into the equivalent of 14:35 (1212). But I can't see her getting into one
