Again can’t some of you read?? I’ve said yes the DA can cut that deal that Rojo proposed, but cops cannot. Too many idiots in this thread think that cops/DA are the same and have the same authority.
I don't disagree, but as a small female runner who "thinks like a criminal" finding a "safe" location to run can feel like an uphill battle. Personally, after years of running on country roads and trails without thinking, I was incredibly spooked by Molly Tibbets' murder a few years back. As much as I love dirt country roads, I now make much smaller circles closer to home when visiting family in the country. Even on bike trails in a safe mid-sized city, every now and then I realize there is no one else around save a vagabond looking guy and have to either pass and hope he isn't a creep opportunist or turn around and add 4 miles to my run... if you are really paying attention as a small female, you are vulnerable actually quite a lot despite planning and trying to run in safe areas and times of day. I've been chased once and video recorded but never attacked thankfully in 1000s of miles. So I bought a treadmill, alter routes, never wear earbuds etc, but it sucks. Most of my favorite routes, bike trails and country roads no longer feel safe, and I hate running along busy roads for other safety reasons. These concerns have taken some of the fun and mental release out of running. Despite probably being overly cautious myself, these incidents are deeply upsetting every time and are for many female runners. Praying for her safe return.
I’m also a female runner who has heard way too many horrible stories. I’m a nurse and work 12 hour shifts so most of my runs have to be done in the dark in the winter. I am always out the door by 4 am. My doubles are usually done at 9 pm but always on a treadmill even in the summer. I log 100+ mpw on the same loop that’s a little under a mile around my house. Yes, that definitely makes me seem insane, but it is also where I feel the safest. I live in a relatively safe town where wildlife is really the only thing most people worry about, but if I’ve learned anything from these stories, it’s always better to not take your chances. I wear one of those safety bracelets, too. If anything feels the slightest bit off, I bag the run and add more on the treadmill at night.
When I was in high school, it was so easy to take safe running for granted. It was never something I considered when walking out the door. Then I went to college in a city that has quite a bit of crime. We always ran in groups, everyone had to bring their phone… we still had people follow us and stop their cars for inappropriate reasons that I won’t get into. That changed my perspective. It’s so sad that this is something everyone (not just females) needs to think about now. This is such a horrible story, and I’m thinking of Eliza and her family and friends and praying for the best outcome. I just hope her story leads to others thinking more about their running routes, schedules, running partners, and the safety measures they take next time they head out the door.

They both work for the state and work together, and the DA or state AG is often referred to as the top cop or chief “law enforcement officer” (aka cop) of their jurisdiction, so I implicitly assumed he meant “the state” should cut that deal.
After reading the updates, I'm in shock by the man. He spends 20 years in prison for this, makes another attempt a year later, and was so careless with it.
He wore the same slides he casually wears, he left them and her cellphone around the scene later to be found, took his cellphone which was backtracked by police at the time of the abduction, and then left the car he adducted her in at his known address and left it there all morning. Then frantically cleans out his car and washes his clothes at his address with a witness. You'd expect this from a rookie.
I think only time will tell with a deeper look into security footage around the area trying to track the vehicle. This and the fact that he did this at 16 makes me think it was a cheap, contract job which is really sad. I'm pulling for her.
You are giving way too much credit to criminals. This isn't TV where the are criminal master minds. Most criminals are like this guy, idiots that act on animal like instincts. Very few Hannibal Lecters out there, most borderline retarded that lack basic human compassion and empathy.
My husband suspicion alarm is firing like crazy, the husband being most commonly responsible in such cases, so here’s my conjecture:
I suspect she already had a nontrivial share of her family company transferred to her name, but she being who she is (seemingly at least) preferred to not monetize that share and choosing instead to continue her modest life as a JKG teacher, but the husband figured that he would be the automatic beneficiary of her assets if she died.
Anyone else can only have a ransom motivation that doesn’t appear to be the case, and if she didn’t already have her share of the company in her name, it would make no sense for the husband to want her dead.
IF she has equity in the family business, which is private, then the shareholders' agreement will very likely forbid the "public" sale (liquidation) of her shares buy the husband. But, since she is a teacher and not working in the business, why exactly would she be given equity in the parents' business while they are still running it? My parents own dozens of properties, it is their business, but have not given any to me... and why on Earth would they?
You have no idea what you're talking about.
Trump and his siblings were given shares in his father's businesses and in some cases on paper ownership of them for tax purposes, often unbeknownst to them as children. Sometimes it is done to avoid taxes in the present, sometimes to avoid estate taxes by transferring funds ahead of time. You know this better than I do.
I’m a small female runner and feel your pain. It’s a bummer we have to think about things like this, but such is reality. I occasionally carry handheld mace and it’s a nice reassurance that I could probably spray a guy in the eye and get away. Have you done much running in suburban housing plans? With all the people out walking dogs, kids playing, cars driving I feel the safest there. Isolated country road creep me out the most. No one to witness what’s going on if you get into trouble. Stay safe !
Officers have footage of the vehicle used in the kidnapping, a black 2013 GMC terrain, in the same area 24 minutes before the mother-of-two was taken at 4:20am in Memphis, Tennessee.
There is smart self preservation and then there is living like an 8nsane person. Go run by yourself in safe suburbs and a oid large cities. There is a happy medium between running predictable routes through the hood and running 30 miles around your block.
There are a few sites where you can check the crime statistics and the demographic makeup of an area and come to a pretty safe conclusion on if you can run alone there.

You don't think you are rolling the dice running at 4 AM every morning? I can't imagine being a woman and running every morning at that time. I used to run at 3 AM for a couple of years but it was relatively safe (Memorial Park in Houston) and a couple of times had van follow me a couple of times but that was it. I would see a lady all the time but she ran with a couple of big Dobermans. I would not mess with those. Have you considered running with a dog?
ban cnn, rolling stone, nytimes, nypost and vice as well the.
Gut wrenching, just so sad to now know what that poor young lady went through. A sad piece of garbage takes a life and doesn't care in the least about her or how it well affect all of those who know her. I say know her because I truly pray she's still alive.
Those of you quick to disagree with Rojo should really think it through. In cases like this, where it is absolutely 100 percent for sure that this person did something to her, they should have "ways" of making him talk, and he would, on where she is. It's always possible that the person is still alive but dying and could be saved.
I know most of you will disagree with that type of thinking, but there is zero doubt that he knows where she is and because of that they should be able to find out with any means possible. She deserves to be found as soon as possible and didn't deserve what that piece of garbage did to her. They should get the information out of him asap.
As for bond, that's ludicrous on too many levels to get into. As others have said, there should be no bound as he hasn't earned that right. He should be locked up forever and never see the outside of a prison again.

You say you are praying for her but you repeatedly call the perpetrator “a piece of garbage.” Maybe you should be praying for yourself if you believe in prayer.
Why is it that the good people are always screwed by the bad people? That pic of her is showing such a glowing, smiling lady and the one of him is showing a evil, very bad person. And of course he gets away with it. He spent 20 years in prison and could have learned a craft. Instead he gets out and goes right back to kidnapping and murder. What a terrible human being. Hope he gets a broken broom shoved up his abdomen in prison.

You need help. There are no good people or bad people. Very simplistic thinking.

Maybe the "good" person is the one who went for a run and is probably lying in the woods right now after being raped and murdered. The "bad" person is maybe the want who abducted her, raped her and savagely murdered her. Or maybe he is the good person and she is the bad person. Is that what you are trying to say?

Gonna call BS on this one. 100+ miles a week, sleeping 5-6 hours a night, and working 12 hour shifts as a nurse on your feet all day? Get lost. I work as a nurse too and I know what that entails in and of itself, and layering that volume of training with that little rest doesn’t happen.

You are a bit slow. I said there are no good or bad people.

He’s just being sophomorically philosophical. Perhaps he’ll grow out of it.
