Osako can still make team, and is in a better situation than Shitara, who just ran 2:16 in the heat. Sugaro, should have held back a bit instead of chasing so hard with a km left, but still was a close 3rd. He is still in driver's seat for the 3rd spot, with the best time to date and a strong performance today.

This is now shifting into texas hold em mentality, but do you gamble and just bet that Shitara doesn't manage to get under 2:05:50 and focus solely on Tokyo Olympics training? Or do you focus on eyeing the fastest marathon you can find to guarantee a spot by your confidence that Osako will get under 2:05:50?

"The twist? If someone runs really fast in between the MGC and the Olympics, they get to kick the third-placer at the MGC off the team. If a man breaks 2:05:50 (the current national record) or a woman breaks 2:22:23 during the Japanese winter marathon season (Fukuoka, Tokyo, and Lake Biwa for the men, Saitama, Osaka, and Nagoya for the women), they get the third spot. So if a stud has a disaster at the MGC, there’s still a way for them to make the team."

He took the World Championships invite over a chance at making the Olympic team. All of the other WC marathoners on the Japanese team made the same decision.

I think if you're Julian, you have him run Tokyo in February. If Shitara is going to break the NR, that is where it will happen (he has to do it either in Tokyo, Fukuoka, or Lake Biwa). Going September-February-August is very doable for a marathon schedule, and by running Tokyo, he has a chance to "play defense" on Shitara. Beat Shitara in Tokyo (well, and make sure no other Japanese guy runs 2:05, but that ain't happening), and he's on the team.

The WC marathon is 3 weeks away. Yuki could have run both.

Shogo Nakamura is your winner, unofficially 2:11:28.
Yuma Hattori, the Fukuoka Marathon champ, is the runner-up in 2:11:35.
Nike Oregon Project's Suguru Osako is 3rd in 2:11:40. Only way Osako isn't on the team is if someone breaks the national record this winter (2:05:50).
Osako looked to be dealing with a cramp but toughed it out in a fierce battle for second. He caught Nakamura at 41k, but Nakamura answered back with a savage move to pull away for the win.
Japan TV shows 2:11:36 for Hattori, and 2:11:41 for Osaka.
I wish i understood Japanese, the interviews for Shogo and Yuma were very short and somewhat abrupt.
while Suguru has been talking for about 4 mins, sounds very contemplative, as if he's weighting the pros and cons of his result, and what the future holds.
Shitara should do Dubai and get the national record.
Based off of Gold Coast, and the fact he has already run 2:06:11, I have to believe that Shitara is in around high 2:05's shape with ideal conditions in Tokyo in February.
This could turn out to be quite the dual between the two.
