Feel free to email me to discuss any moderation issues. We've made some good progress from email in this thread.mailto:wejo@letsrun.com
This thread went off the rails a bit with 1 particular poster hijacking it and trying to make it about one moderator so we have locked it.
Before I give my takeaways, if you have concerns about moderating, or posts, please report them or email me directly. We make it very easy to be heard at LetsRun.com and reach us. But if you sidetrack threads by discussing moderation, those posts will be removed and can lead to temporary bans as they ruin the discussion for everyone else.
But some takeaways. 1) Dealing with the problematic posters/troublemakers isn't easy but we need to make sure in dealing with them we do not go too far and harm the experience for other posters 2) The filters often flag people by accident. Exempt SC members from the filters at the very least. 3) Consider creating a toggle so people don't have to see "this post was deleted in a thread". In the posts where the trouble makers try and takeover, these notifications start to ruin the experience. 4) Consider moving some posts out of the main forum. 5) Look at limiting how often people can post in a thread. 6) Try and get a better handle on the use of VPNs by people posting, reporting posts, upvoting, etc. 7) I will actively monitor all of malmo's moderating and posts for the next week and give him feedback. We already actively communicate but some of your points and emails were helpful.
Malmo is not going away. I strongly suspect that he was an early investor in LRC or a mentor to the Johnsons. In any event, his relationship with the Brojos makes him untouchable.
People are leaving and switching to other outlets. If you like friendly coverage, you go to Citius or The Stride Report. Want to talk about training or share tips? Reddit Advanced Running. Looking to snark a bit? Reddit’s RunningCircleJerk lets you make jokes. Interestingly, those Reddit forums suffer far less gatekeeping and the humor rises far above fat jokes and hobby joggers insults.
Weldon - if you don’t compare your product to other offerings, then you should. The aforementioned sites do provide what Robert calls “long run chat” without the corrosive and often bitter tone displayed on this forum. Oh, they require registration and my user name is an anonymous handle that protects my privacy. My speech is free on those platforms.
My registered name was banned for no good reason. I emailed lrc and they said 'you are restored' but I'm not. Still banned for life.
So I have to use anonymous names now.
Maybe it's ok to kick people off the website unfairly if it cleans up the forums, but I suspect I'm not the only one who posts anonymously not by wish, but because they can't register a name anymore because of faulty moderating.
A lot of guys with registered user names have been posting for years on LR without getting banned. Can you provide some samples of the posts that got you banned.
So accounts can be permanently banned but somehow having 100s of copy pasted posts deleted per day doesn’t reach that level? Reading “I’m 39 and dangerously close to breaking 1:50 for the 800” on a post about Josh Hoey going for a WR is not accretive to anyone, especially when it gets deleted and reposted 14 times. This just completely derailing the thread

I used a word that starts with an s and then continues with a very nasty pejorative word used against african americans.
I used it as the dictionary says, in a non-racial way, no double meaning, just using the word in the correct way.
Here's the definition - I don't want to write the word again.
laugh in a half-suppressed, typically scornful way: "the boys at school were sure to s...r at him behind his back" · "“Doesn't he look like a fool?” they s...d"

The filters are actually idiotic. L!btard is banned. Libtards is not.

How? How does that comment derail the thread?
Because he doesn’t coach or run a sub 1:50 800. And posting it14 times?

I used a word that starts with an s and then continues with a very nasty pejorative word used against african americans. Why? Trying to be clever while sneaking in a racist comment?

Can someone start a thread to talk about all the pro workout youtubes....really doesn't fall into the rise and fall of running youtubers thread. I'm bored in the freezing cold/snow and watching a bunch of these -- Hocker, Sinclaire, Jane, Mantz, Blanks, Fisher, etc....and really want to chat about these freaks of athleticism, but can't think of a snappy title worthy of Letrun.
Malmo will often "take over" a thread if it's on a topic that is personal to him--races or runners from his time.
In these threads, he will delete posts and ban users for: disagreeing with him in any way; or for not disagreeing with him but merely participating in the thread, bc doing so takes away attention from Malmo.
But when I bring something like this up to Wejo, he just tells me that all of these posts/users malmo has deleted/banned were attacking him.
It's exhausting
I grew up watching/following track during Malmo's time. What I've found is that when he "hijacks" a thread it is because he's correcting misconceptions that others posted.
believe you me I know. I’ve posted about antisemitism before, and it’s pretty shocking some of the comments I got. It was very interesting to me that those posts lasted a long time (and some may still be there) but any criticism of moderation will get you deleted immediately, if not banned.
I’m prepared to allow for certain kinds of views. However some of the posts on my thread more or less advocated for violence against Jews, and that would definitely fall under the category of violent posts that I would delete.
Good news is those kinds of posts are pretty rare in the grand scheme of things. The vast majority of posts on this board are running related, as they should be.
Heres a good example of why we shouldnt have threads pn topics like politics, religion or current news that’s not running related. Why is this stuff posted on a running site??
Of course the poster pretending to be a Texan used his vpn or whatever to go through and downvote me a trillion times. I figured he would, but that is the sort of annoying thing that letsrun should come up with a solution for. It should be one vote per person on each post.

Malmo is the Cheney to their George W.
Malmo has been bullying internet running forums since the 90s
There's gotta be a way to make this forum more approachable to the average runner who takes this sport seriously. The posters here have the best advice relative to r/advancedrunning, r/running, other fitness forums but the problem is wording your questions in a way that doesn't get you bullied into a paste.
