article says it happened 10 am. that's not you were out in the scorching heat all afternoon and sought refuge. with a friend til your next heat. or stopped by the tent to hang. that's you were going to stay in our tent all day. and you just packed that knife.
if i had to guess the throwers are off checking out the event area or doing their first flight throws in the morning, come back looking for room in the tent -- the plight of anyone who doesn't immediately set up shop and stake their sleeping bag and pillow claim -- and have to deal with this. we personally would never have let friends, girls, or other teams set up in the tent because there's too little room already and there's a risk items sprout legs when you let anyone in the tent. and when i think why someone would be in the wrong tent and have a knife in their duffle......
personally i was UNDERprepared for most meets. hungry, exposed. memory serves my idea of planning was my spikes, lunchables, some water and cokes, an alarm clock, and a vague idea when my next heat was. and this kid as a knife?
one way of dealing with some of this, this is a tight geographic district. they don't need to travel far. our first state progression meet was 2 nights after class. akin to what college did. for area the drive was minimal. the field people get afternoon sun, which is not that hot in spring. the track events get running at dusk or in the dark, pleasant. and you get a day's rest for distance doubles or sprint/hurdle prelim/finals.
and, side benefit of an april night meet, less concern with shelter. i don't care if i am under the tent. i don't have to endure a day in the elements. i can hang with friends and family in the stands, including other teams. no intrateam conflict over sleeping bag configurations. none of this nonsense. the tent is maybe where my bag resides, or maybe it's with me. and as someone who was poor and often underfed and drained for meets, i can eat breakfast at home. i can have lunch at school. and then i can maybe last the meet off snacks then eat after. if it rains there's the bus.
i get the daylong ordeal for an invite meet, or if you're in, say, a west texas district (like odessa permian's) where some of the schools might be 2 hours from the host school. but this is a group of schools from the same medium size town and school district.
