I agree, and I think that the individual surprise was Everlyn Kemboi of Utah Valley taking a close third place. She even lead the pack for much of the race.

Does anyone know why the champs are held at OK state for the second time in 3 seasons? I have no idea how the site is chosen so honestly asking.
OK state will race at home several times this season, would not be surprised at all if this experience helps them a lot at NCAA champs. Everyone says it's a tough course.
Oregon is hosting track for the next 162 years. I assume it is a yearly bid for XC. The course is hilly but has footing like a golf green.
It goes through a bid process and then I believe a committee decides.

They do hill repeats and know exactly how fast they should run up the 1k incline.
It’s a pretty big advantage.

I can't answer your question but that is not unusual.
Shortly after the Lavern Gibson course in Terre Haute was developed and opened it hosted the NCAA D1 championship meet from 2004-2011, 8 years in a row. From 2002-2019, Lavern Gibson hosted the meet 13 times. That's 13 out of 18 years! The site is a dedicated XC course and is used for a lot of meets. The meet was in Louisville, KY 3 of 6 years between 2012-2017.
The future sites of the D1 meets:
2023 - Charlottesville, VA
2024 - Madison, WI
2025 - Columbia, MO

Runners in AL, NC, VA, WV, CO, UT, NM, etc must be doing similar hill work, but the home course adv is not nothing. esp for the top two who'll challenge for the win.

I am curious what in his methodology ranks Valby 1 and Tuohy 4. They raced head to head 3 times and each time Tuohy beat her. And Tuohy has the 15:14. Even though the rating difference is small, I do wonder why. And are there other runners ranked seemingly too high or low?

Valby ran a faster 3k than Tuohy indoors on a much slower track and got injured before NCAA’s.
Valby had a massive training setback that required months to recover from and still got 2nd to Tuohy.
Imagine if Valby had been healthy the entire time and never had to deal with that broken foot.

I assume you are serious and I guess that it could be a forecast based on trends. But certainly Tuohy is trending better than Chelangat? And Chmiel? Anyway, there must be something in the methodology....but I guess we find out in 1 1/2 months who gets to what level. Splitting hairs maybe.

Yeah he said his methodology was 'average of the last three races'. I wish the interviewer had pressed a little more on any other factors he is weighting in his algorithm because it doesn't totally make sense in some cases. It sounds like he really really likes Valby & Cook and that is a factor.
Mccabe also ran a faster 3k than Valby and was strong in XC last year so who knows.
He did say several times that being at OK state is a big advantage for the OK state runners and was part of why he thinks Alex Meier from OK could win Men's listen.
Anyone know what his early season predictions were last year and how on they were?
