If the vaccine is "highly effective at protecting vaccinated people against Covid-19," then they are protected. End of story. It doesnt matter whether Cole Hocker or any other healthy individual is not vaccinated.

If people actually examine the scenarios of how impossible it is that cole is endangering others - low risk of reinfection, impossibility of asymptomatic spread, low to zero number of unvaccinated people - then this becomes a perfectly fine situation.

Thank you, there have been a ton of papers looking at in vitro antibody neutralization data and T-cell responses against the variants using vaccinated patient serum and recovered patient serum.

One can reasonably predict that vaccinated people -should- have a stronger response to Delta than the average recovered person, but real world data would show the true answer.

However, gathering real-world data on this is quite challenge given all the confounders such as testing frequency, etc.

I think Hocker, if he has actually recovered from COVID, is well protected against serious disease (of course) but could easily test positive and possibly spread. Even one dose of vaccine would lower those odds.

I think he poses a relatively small risk to other but that risk is still much larger than someone NOT traveling to close proximity with 1000s of people from around the world. This alone recommends the most immunity possible.

The other risk is to himself. He risks a positive test from Delta that could ruin his Olympics.

It is selfish and anti-scientific for you to be demanding people like Cole Hocker be vaccinated because it would appease your emotions. You would feel better that they got the vaccine (even if it was against their will) because you like the perception of helping strangers and contributing to a perceived altruistic cause, especially when it takes little to no effort to do so!

You are selfish because you are making someone else inject an experimental drug into their own body so that you can have more happy feelings.

It's not unlike when people pressure the one person at a party who isn't drinking to chug a beer. The person for whatever reason doesnt want to drink but everyone else wants them to drink because it would make them feel better if 100% of people were drinking and it would be fun to watch.

It's okay for me to rush out and ultimately get jabbed with something developed in 6 months that may compromise my athletic performance - even momentarily. Not for Cole Hocker and if I was him, I am doing the exact same thing and f--k you if you don't like it. If I can't 100% guarantee my reaction to the vaccine (which NOBODY can) then I am not rolling the dice with what might be a once in a lifetime opportunity.

LOL it does matter since he’s going to a country where the majority don’t want the Olympics AND they can’t all get vaccinated as easily as you can in the US, that’s the point.

While I encourage anyone who can get vaccinated to do so, it is each person’s choice whether to or not. Just like it’s Japan’s choice on how they want to handle people going into THEIR country who aren’t vaccinated and are risks to carry and spread it to THEIR unvaccinated population… cuz #FREEDOM

100000000%. Too many people are ignoring this. He’s an ELITE athlete. If he’s off by 1% he doesn’t move on. He can’t risk detrimental side effects like a hobby jogger can. This isn’t running the local Turkey trot while under the weather. He was training for NCAAs, the Trials, and now the Olympics. Training must be nearly perfect to try and medal at the Olympics. If he is social distancing and wearing a mask while only seeing the people he lives with what is the problem? He’s going to be tested more before racing than everyone in this thread combined has probably been tested. For running fans you people show an incredible lack of awareness about training and how detrimental small side effects could be to super elite athletes.
