The Delorme tracker isn't meant to provide accurate pace data on runs--it's simply to provide insight on where he is--the accurate pacing/cadence/heart rate data can be found on all the Strava uploads. In short, a GPS "pings" satellites at a more frequent basis (likely 1 second intervals) than the Delorme (I think over 10+ seconds). Each of these "pings" provides a data point. In the case of the GPS watch these closer data points provide a more accurate distance and "track" to what he is actually running, whereas the Delorme will create a track with a straight line between further away data points. This is also why you will see the distance reading from The Delorme each night being shorter than what they are reporting. The Delorme is "cutting corners" by not having as many data points.

The Delorme ping rate is configurable... the default is 1 minute. It can be set to as short as 10 seconds, but anything under 30s requires the GPS to be on continually and shortens battery life so I suspect they're probably keeping it at 1 minute (for logging/speed calculation) as well as the 2 minutes for posting online.
You are probably right--thanks for the clarification. One minute intervals would certainly explain the discrepancies as well!

He might decide to add a few miles the days before, and put in a really long run (90-100) the last day to get it done. Skipping the last night's rest sleep could save him 10+ hours.

I agree with this, and I think it is more like a minute for the Delorme as someone else said. What I don't understand is how the Delorme shaving times is giving him higher speeds on occasion. This isn't the first time it's shown a faster top speed.
Let's say he's running 9 min/mile pace for a mile, in reality. But it's a curved path, and the Delorme shortens it to 0.9 miles. That would show a slower 10 min/mile pace, not faster.
I guess the Delorme just has other glitches because it's not meant to be a precise measurement tool. Maybe the GPS is less accurate so sometimes it'll show the in between points farther away than they really are, which does result in a quicker time in that interval. By no means am I suggesting that Pete is doing something wrong. I know he has watches on and Strava is showing more accurate paces.

Looks like he is 20 miles away now. He usually calls it a day in late afternoon. What an awesome accomplishment.
I considered a very long last day as a possible strategy to shave an extra 8-10 hours off. Logistically, it might be a better environment for family, friends, fans, and media if he finishes during daylight hours in lower Manhattan. Similar to the 8:00 a.m. PDT start at San Francisco City Hall. I'm guessing Pete will make that decision when he wakes up October 24th.

Your GPS watch is certainly incapable of transmitting a signal all the way to space. The GPS watch is not "pinging" any satellites. It's a receiver. The satellites don't even "ping" the watches either. There's no 2-way communication.

I'm the one who said "a minute" and the power-saving feature is that it does not maintain continuous GPS.
So it needs to get a new GPS position before each minute's position-transmission.
My guess is the higher speeds are due to GPS positional inaccuracies in between two pings. You can see it bouncing all over the place at their stop points, sometimes, as well, could be maybe a single stray positional ping from inside the RV before turning it off that flags the "max speed".
I wasn't trying to hint at cheating. I was just curious about why the tracker shows such wide variation in max speed. It sounds like it is a limitation of the technology and is not relevant to the tracking as that appears to be very consistent as does his pacing.

As of today, day 30, he's covered 2109.6 miles, a 70.3 mile per day average including a zero day!
For running days, he's done 72.7 mile average.
He has 990.4 miles to go. At his 72.7 average, that's 13.6 days; at the 70.3 average it's 14.1 days. Very likely he will be finishing near the end of day 44 (Oct 25) like Pontif says above, but my over/under would be after 11:00 a.m.. Somewhere between 1pm and 6pm...
Fair. Probably the wrong terminology to accurately reflect the technology/what's actually happening; just trying to make sense of it for the lay person (like myself).

Just found this thread and skimmed from the beginning. 70+ miles per day, amazing! (I admit I may have skipped a few pages via RV). I would never have had an interest or been able to appreciate this if it weren't for the Robert Young thread.
