Tied this meet, Lavillenie won DL (he had already secured the DL before Zurich).
Jager did not run a smart race. Instead of doing his best Prefontaine imitation, he should have used a more cerebral strategy. There are no points for effort in track.

If this were a championship meet, they'd keep going. In DL competitions they usually don't do that.

Does anyone think they are doing a poor job of explaining what people need to do to win the jackpot. What's the point of having the jackpot if you aren't going to hype it up.
Just read our preview. If Powell or Meite won, they won the DL title.

If this were a championship meet, they'd keep going. In DL competitions they usually don't do that.
Place in PV is determined not only by your highest clearance, but by counting back to see what other heights you might have missed once or twice along the way. It's called the countback.
If both athletes entered the competition at the same height, cleared every height on first attempts, but then missed 3 times on the final height(s) attempted. That would be a tie.
Or, if they both had a miss on first attempt at some lower height, but the same height, along with the other factors of the first scenario, that would be a tie.

Meite would've won DL if he got second. Now he was third with the same time 9.99 as the second place Simbine.
another reason we are likely seeing some more tactical races is that if you win the DL you get an automatic bid into the world champs the next year (not sure how this works for DL competitions in the same year as the worlds, maybe 2 wild cards into the next worlds?). Especially for some of these countries where making the team is cut-throat (Ethiopia in the 5000 comes to mind) that is a massive incentive.
I should also say that im looking at the 2015 qualifying standards for this, I did not find the 2017 version but I assume whenever it gets published that rule will be the same.
