I think you nailed it. The problem is that most of us can not relate to Galen and this is another example. Galen handled this situation in a fashion that most of us would be embarrassed by. Whether his decision was right or wrong is irrelevant. Most of us would be embarrassed with a DNF followed by a workout. Most of us can not relate to Galen Rupp. This means that when Galen does something special an AR or an Olympic Medal we do not give him the credit he deserves because he acts different than the way we would. And how about the time Salazar had Rupp warm up at Pre only not to run the race just to mess with Solinsky. totally not classy.

Are you kidding me? ^^^ First of all, Rupp didn't run the race because of the pollen levels in Eugene that evening. Everyone knows he has asthma, hence why he was wearing his face mask at USA's that year. And how are you gonna bring Solinsky into this when he didn't finish that race either? Do some research.

Seriously, let's start the list of people's positive DIRECT personal experiences with Willis vs Rupp. Even on an American board, the Willis thread could go for pages. The Rupp thread will end with "He got an Olympic silver, so STFU, brah."

Candian, what is your direct, personal, experience with Rupp? I'll concede that Rupp is not the ambassador for the sport that Willis is. He may not be as outgoing and personable. What is confusing to me is how the Rupp haters can criticize everything he does. How do you have any idea this is the exception to the rule? Do you mean he is not interacting with as many fans etc. as Willis or that the interaction in the video was fake? The first, to me, is just a personality difference. The second, I'm not buying.

Sometime in 2012 before the Olympics, I saw Rupp at church (not the typical parish I attend) and on the way out I walked over and wished him good luck. He said thank you and that was about it. Maybe Nick Willis would have had more to say, but Rupp was plenty nice and did not seem at all annoyed to be approached.

I don't agree with everything Salazar and Rupp do. I think Salazar has, at times, tried too hard to micro-manage race conditions etc.. However, these posters that rip Rupp if goes left or right, up or down, says yes or no, etc. etc. are what really annoys me.

rupp is under way more than a cloud of suspicion. More like a tsunami of suspicion

Even if he is clean and even if he ran a WR for 10,000 and the marathon, he will still be too goofy to ever push our sport to mainstream. He is just too weird and unlikable.

Bottom line is it is bad sportsmanship to drop out when you can finish a race. But leave the calling out to the lets run crowd and the media.

DO you even Race? In a race you sprint hard at the end, if you feel a sharp pain, you STOP and DNF (Smart). Then you look at the situation carefully, fix the issue, and do a workout. A workout you don't go all out, you don't sprint, you do it 85%-95% of max. This means you don't go beyond the threshold that may cause an injury. It is why you call it training, not racing. I want to see NW doing a 10k vs Rupp, and run 26:40s, and actually go with the pace, I bet he DNF 10/10.

@ least he won a silver in a 10k, that matters. What has any other American born runner done in the last say 50 Years (NOTHING). What have you done, since you were born at running (NOTHING).

I have met both guys and both are a little odd to be honest. Willis is by far the better tactician, Rupp the faster time-trialer. Willis is really smart when it comes to planning his training, calendar and racing, while Rupp relies on a lot of outside influence in his decision making. This leads to the erratic racing schedule that Rupp has and his DNF/DNSs. Rupp is immensely talented as is Willis, however what Willis doesn't have in pure talent he makes up for in approach.
