metcalf was competing in field events (SP) and in his own tent. i don't want to hear "but he wasn't running" like the victim wasn't even supposed to be there. field eventers are people too.
are we seriously parsing that the "school" owns the tent but no one constituting that "team" can tell you to leave? it's not literally trespass but is the sort of thing you could get kicked out of your events/the meet or escorted out of the complex by the sheriff for.
the backpack and such starts to make it sound less like saying hey to a friend and more like he literally set up in someone else's tent. if i was catching up with my buddies from other schools it was on neutral ground. sit down in the stands. give them a handshake or hug out walking around. i mean my memory we had limited space and not even girlfriends were in the tent. the article talks like it was raining. you come back from doing field stuff and it's raining and the tent is full and some dude from another team is in your tent. "get out." that simple. if you are literally set up in the wrong tent, the answer should not be, make me.
the smart fix to this is you go get your coach who shows the kid the door. and if he resists 5 seconds he's out of the meet. the only reason the kid does this is "oh, is some other kid gonna make me move." methinks this ends different if the sheriff or coaches are involved. perhaps it's i grew up playing soccer but you have to know when you're being baited and the alternative solutions.
he's gonna try and say it was self defense, and maybe it works to some extent on what he pleas out for, and how soon he sees daylight again, but who brings some huge knife to a track meet? who goes to the other tent and resists being told to leave?
The perp had his plans for the day. Went out of his way looking for trouble, instigated an argument, challenged people to "make him move" while trespassing with a weapon, and successfully completed his goal.
