Hey look at that, Herriman just completely bombed. They have no experience whatsoever racing in wet and muddy conditions. Maybe the conditions do impact others than just Californians.
There's a whole season for what you're looking for. It's called track.
I'm talking about the weather. Not the course. The sloppy mud and standing water is way beyond your normal wet weather. And it happens every year.
Imagine if they could invent some type of cover or something they could put them under during the long winded intros so they aren't soaked and freezing before the start. Oh wait they could easily have a large tent.
Vause is proof that to win races, you don't need to be the best runner, but you need to be the best runner on that day.
this was said last year when Jojo Jourdon won. Turns out he was the best runner, and now the fastest true freshman in College over everyone including griffith
Maybe Vause on his way to a great ncaa career too, but to be fair Jourdon was a much better known runner than Vause, so a bit less of an upset than Vause.
AF ran great but you gotta feel for them. I think this is their 3rd time placing 2nd?
5th time finishing 2nd...
Actually I think they had the best race out of anyone in the field, perhaps Kaden Evans could have been higher, but considering they graduated 6 of their top 7 last year, making NXN in the hardest region, let alone finishing 2nd over the defending national champ is nuts.

Maybe to be the "best runner" on that day, you have to be from the Southwest lol.
I want to set things straight for all those attributing SW dominance at NXN to conditions. Nobody from SW is accustomed to those conditions. SLC and Denver get among the least precipitation in the country - total precipitation is similar to Los Angeles. The climate is dry. The cross country season is rarely cold in Colorado. I bet not a single XR race in the Colorado front range (where everyone lives) was run on a day when the high temperature was less than 60. I don't think we got significant rain in Colorado's front range all fall. I lived in California for 34 years and in Colorado for the last 20. The courses in Colorado are fairly similar to California - hard packed dirt or crushed grinder trails, maybe with a little bit of grass. The state meet courses are not dissimilar. I bet most runners in Colorado hadn't worn spikes all season until NXR unless they raced out of state. So please stop saying SW is accustomed to Portland conditions. They are not. The SW is just much, much better than any other region.
for me part of the frustration is that pointing out legitimate physiological reactions humans have is seen as creating excuses and taking valor away from others
as a coach, that is definitely not my intention. it's more about understanding why athletes will have certain results under certain conditions and how they should interpret them
anyway, just look at the actual weather data over the past two weeks: the average daily high in Denver, CO has been just under 50, which is equivalent to the average daily low in Thousand Oaks, CA - these are not at all similar conditions we're talking a 20 degree difference here which is a massive difference in one's setpoint
and lets not pretend that coming down from altitude doesn't have it's advantages
Oh please! Let’s not pretend that 40+ degrees is in any way extreme while ignoring the rain, standing water, and slick mud: something that many of the athletes lack experience with, not just those from CA. You also can’t treat every kid from CA (or even SoCal) the same. We all respond to different conditions differently.

When I look back, are the better career runners coming from the Footlocker or the NXN winners? There's great runners from each, but I'm guessing that NXN produces better career runners. (Remembering that Footlocker has a longer history)
Races like today's in Portland requires tough as hell runners.

Could be wrong but I haven’t seen anyone saying SW is accustomed to Portland conditions. Only that CA is not. Seems like both those regions ran in unfamiliar conditions, which makes what SW did today even more incredible.

I've been to Denver and Salt Lake when its 10 degrees with a 30mph wind. Cold in Los Angeles is 58.
