No. According to the insider at Shea's high school, Shea decided to go to NC State in December. Has any other top high school runner deliberately choosen to lie about where they were going to college all the way until after they had actually graduated from high school? Very strange behavior.
This is false by the way. She did not decide in December. She was still visiting schools in the spring (source: I was one of the schools)
And she's made a huge change, having had a very solitary HS career without a team and now joining one of the most team-centered programs. Given this, her freshman season is going as well as I expected. By next year, I definitely think she'll start showing major growth.

She also did not have the best Spring season so it's not like she was starting at a high level. In 12 months she may be a very different runner than today.
Not her. She is a great runner but NC State is done. Henes is a great recruiter but she is not the sharpest tack. Shea could have gone anywhere. She should have picked a top academic school that is good at distance.

The classic "Henes doesn't know what she's doing" argument. Never change letsrun.
People used to think Jerry was the best coach in the world. Henes knows what she is doing. She relies on her strength which is recruiting. Give her some credit.

I forgot what a cant miss recruit Sam Bush was. Definitely no development in college there. Same with Grace Hartman. Now with Hannah Gapes. Terrible development and training by Henes there.

Well, plenty of the top HS kids are at programs in HS that push the limits which means they are pretty close to their ceiling in HS and won't develop as much at the next level. The only blame you can place on the coach is recruiting these kids knowing their background and the chance they fizzle out.
Shea was coached in HS by a guy who pushes the limit because he needs someone to promote his program to make him more money. What happens to them once they move on is not his problem. Yes, there may be an exception or two, but not many.

For comparison, Allie Zealand who had a much better senior year in hs running wise and is still be coached by her mom I believe, was 71st at pre Nats, 15 seconds ahead of Shea (111st). So, keep some perspective.

what is this about "someone to promote his program to make him more money." Are you saying a high school coach will make more money with success in coaching cross country at the high school level?

On the other hand, Rachel Forsyth (MSU) (surprised she wasn't redshirted) was 53rd (20.16) after running Track until the very end of August (2nd at world U20 1500m), so had basically no base whatsoever. Presumably no rest after the season either - straight into XC mode.
Alabama women upset NC Stste at Loyola. They had a true freshman from Iowa beat Shea to do it.
Pinning that loss on Shea is unfair. AL won by 14 points while Dorenkamp beat Shea by 5 places. But to my point, Dorenkamp also had a better hs senior year running wise than Shea and ran several prs as a senior. Shea had great results as a sophomore and junior but something was off as a senior. It will take some time to hopefully get back to a higher level.

or am i completely misreading this.
she didn't run for her HS, she ran for a private coach who runs a very expensive program.
Was wondering how Ellie was doing at NC State. Injured, bad fit or just burned out doing all those HS races at a young age? Hope she rebounds and shines.
