Agree - as is they have the 6 fastest qualifying times ( from quarterfinals) in the same heat which surely should not be what they would strive for even undertanding they seed based on place.

Those two won't allow themselves to get boxed and shuffled back. Both have high profile examples of when it didn't work in their favor. Tuohy learned from the two indoor final defeats in 2022 when she tried to run both races while stuck on the rail mid pack and her rally fell shy both times. Barnett was jostled early and dropped back to irrelevancy during the World U20 final last year.

It won't impact her ability to compete. There was an Ivy League champion Julia Fenerty who ran the 800 at regionals last week after already announcing she was transferring to Duke. She barely missed advancing to nationals.

The Frias situation was very unusual. I think Duke was caught off guard and got emotional once they found out Frias entered the portal. That had to be quite a bit of investment in a highly rated recruit from the other side of the country, only for her to bail after less than one full year.

Watched the race. Incredibly impressive run. WOULD have been NCAA all-time #2, but since her NAIA season is over, (notice she was wearing a Nike non-descript outfit), her time won’t count on the NCAA list but:

Why are people still arguing about the seeding? It is done regardless of whether or not you agree with it. Besides, about an hour ago, Saturday's race became meaningless. We all know who the collegiate champion is for 2023.

She runs for coaches who have been credibly accused of doping their athletes, so not worth a passing thought.

Since NAIA is not part of NCAA, her runs never make the NCAA list. That was part of the con list to stay at HU. Will be interesting to see what t&f news does w an out of season naia time. It does appear to be a USA u20 record, besting EFRaimson.

Here's some thoughts on 'the other' 1500 semi. Despite it being slower, it's packed with talent from top to bottom. One thing I forgot to mention in the other heat is weather. The west runners will be facing 80 w 70% humidity instead of cool and dry, which evens the playing field. I'll do this one a bit differently.

Prs under 4:10: Botts, Riggins, Penn, Lostracco

Prs at 4:11: Flockhart, Asekol, Pellicoro

Prs at 4:12 or higher: Jepkirui, Howell, Gibson, Ayyildiz, Maatoug

This heat is harder to handicap, as I could make a very good case for the bottom 5 to finish top 5. There's no obvious choice for who leads this; Riggins, Flockhart, Ayyildiz and Gibson have most to gain w a fast race, and Howell has shown she can win from front or back. Sadly, my guess is the race will be slow and Howell will lead by default.

Riggins and Flockhart will move on lap 3 to hit 1100 together w Howell in 3:11. Botts, Penn and Maatoug will kick hard...Botts wins in 4:13, followed by Howell, Penn, Flockhart, and Maatoug all in 4:14. Riggins and Ayyildiz finish 6 and 7, but no q. Lostracco and her giant pr streak come to an end.

If I'm wrong (and I will be) both Riggins and Ayyildiz could just be sitting on huge races, so could be at the front. Lostracco could go for broke and find more pr magic. Flockhart (kicked in) and Maatoug (not enough kick) most likely to be upset.

She is 5-1/2 months younger than Cook and 19-1/2 months younger than Tuohy. If you want to be super precise, it is 168 days younger than Cook and 590 days younger than Tuohy.

In world athletics you have an age year for U16, U18, U20, U23 etc. Touhy and Maatoug are part of current age 21 class/cohort, Cook & Wiley part of same age 20 group. The few months difference don't affect the year one competes in.
