I am simply saying that having a transit cop ride the A Train (or whatever it is called) every day would result in a situation where someone with training knows who and what to look out for, so civilians don't have to handle the situation themselves. The transit cop on my Denver train knew the guy and knew exactly how to deescalate the situation and get him to leave. It was clearly something he does all the time. Might work in other cities, too.
Seems like a much better situation for everyone involved.
Easier done in smaller cities, what would the bloody bill be for that in NYC with a million lines and trains.
Unless there is political will to raise to taxes or fares or both to support this it will be more of what we have seen.
A year before the pandemic I was in a situation like the ex soldier but the panhandler who aggressively tried to block my way backed off after he seized up my build. Lucky for the two of us I didn't apply the wrestling moves I know as I could have easily killed this man.
This wasn't in a big city but an outer suburb of a big city. These confrontations can happen anywhere.
This has happened out on the fringes of California. Homeless people have unofficial tent cities and city workers and volunteers check up on them.
By the way just because you are homeless doesn't mean you aren't functioning or semi-productive. Many are homeless because the cost of living have passed them by or aren't able to work and benefits are near useless in any expensive city.

In 2021, Jordan Neely slugged a 67 year old woman in the face as she exited the subway, breaking her nose and fracturing her orbital bone. Neely was arrested 44 times, but never faced real justice for terrorizing New Yorkers. The @ManhattanDA shares responsibility for his death for creating an anti law enforcement culture. Habitual felons like Neely should not roam freely to terrorize & prey on innocent members of our communities.
